We are seeking a highly experienced, enthusiastic and motivated individual to lead the In Vivo Patient Derived Models (PDM) team in the Breast Cancer Now Research Unit at KCL directed by Professor Andrew Tutt. This team provides expertise and supports in vivo experiment design and conduct for the Unit, to enable all In Vivo modelling and establishment and use of patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models for translational studies. As part of the team, s/he will develop and conduct a program of in vivo research work with the Units Principle Investigators, this will include initial development of PDX models directly from patient samples. The post includes hands-on research and lab management tasks including the line management of the day-to-day activities of research technician team members. The post holder will develop a collaborative program of work in consultation with Dr Rebecca Marlow (Patient derived modelling Staff Scientist and Project Licence Holder) and the Unit Director and Deputy Directors.
The objective of this post is to provide expertise and support in vivo experiment design and conduct for the Unit and to enable establishment and use of PDX models for translational studies and to utilize experimental models of breast cancer with the aim of identifying and characterising targets and associated biomarkers for breast cancer treatment. The post holder will lead, organize, perform and report on in vivo studies. This will include, but is not limited to, animal handling and health monitoring, surgical implantation procedures, drug administration via various routes, PDX model generation, xenograft/allograft orthotopic and metastatic modeling, in vivo model whole animal imaging (including IVIS) and accurate database design and maintenance. The post holder will contribute to the assessment of new therapeutic approaches. Experience of working with animals is essential, together with ability to perform standard laboratory in vitro techniques.
The PDM team has generated a large panel of in vivo PDX experimental models of breast cancer, with the aim of identifying and characterising targets and associated biomarkers for breast cancer treatment. The post holder will interact with the members of the KCL BCN team, conducting complex 3D organoid cell culture experiments. This post will provide material for the derivation and production of patient-derived organoid (PDO) cultures from in vivo PDX models in consultation with the Staff Scientist, Dr Marlow.
Applicants may have a PhD in biological sciences and/or significant previous experience with in vivo research. It is essential for the post-holder to hold a Personal Licence or have undertaken Home Office Module A, B, & C training in order to fulfil its key objectives. Candidates will not be shortlisted unless this requirement is met. Knowledge of breast cancer in vivo models, including PDX and intraductal models (e.g. Sflomos et al 2016 PMID: 26947176) is advantageous. The post-holder will demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and collaborative working practices. Excellent organizational and communication skills are essential.
The post will be based in Professor Tutt’s own laboratory at the KCL Guy’s Campus. On regular occasions, the appointed candidate will also interact with the Patient derived Modelling team within the Breast Cancer Now Research Centre at the Institute of Cancer Research. The BCN KCL Team has recently reviewed its grant award for a further 5 years until 2025
This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for two years.
