The research will entail precise synthesis of well-defined (i) core-shell nanoparticles with strong magnetic anisotropy and (ii) ferromagnetic nanowires with high shape anisotropy by means of wet chemistry techniques and physical deposition methods. The candidate will be responsible for structural, morphological and magnetic characterization of the resultant nanoparticles and nanostructures. This research will be complemented by collaborations and interactions with scientists on electron microscopy, magnetism, and other characterization methods, across INL.

(d)  Scientific Area: Chemistry, Materials science

Description of the functions and key primary responsibilities: The successful candidate will work on the tasks of the SR&TD project, and will be assigned the following working plan:

  • Synthesis of core-shell nanoparticles and ferromagnetic nanowires
  • Structural, morphological and magnetic characterization of the nanoparticles and nanostructures.

Supervision: The work plan will be developed at the INL within the Nanochemistry Group under the scientific guidance of Yury Kolen’ko.

Eligibility conditions, required qualifications and expertise: Candidates must comply with the following requirements:

(a)   Hold an academic degree (Master degree or equivalent) in any of the following areas: Chemistry, Materials Science, or similar;

(d)  Expertise and/or knowledge in

  • Chemistry, Materials Science, or related;
  • Background in the design and synthesis of well-defined core-shell and anisotropic nanoparticles using various wet chemistry techniques;
  • Hands-on experience in the synthesis and characterization of inorganic nanoparticles and their post-modification;
  • Background in magnetism and investigation of the associated structureproperty relationships;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Great interaction and communicating skills;
  • Project and time management skills;
  • Literature and patent searching skills;
  • Knowledge of lab safety;

(e) Fluency in English is required.

Supporting Documents

Candidates must enclose the following supporting documents in pdf format, failing which the application will not be considered for evaluation:

(a)            Cover letter;

(b)            Curriculum Vitae;

©            Official transcripts of all relevant academic degrees.

(d)            Declaration issued by the higher education institution at which the Candidate is enrolled (in the PhD programme or diploma) accepting that the activities to be developed at INL will be duly considered as part of the work towards the PhD degree or diploma and committing to enter into an agreement with INL, detailing the terms and conditions for the collaboration, if the candidate is selected (Template).

(e)            Copy of identification document;

(f)            For non-EU Citizens residing in Portugal, documental evidence attesting the legal right to reside in Portugal;

Concerning paragraph © (official transcripts of all relevant academic degrees), please bear in mind that academic degrees or diplomas awarded by higher education institutions outside Portugal must be recognised according to the Portuguese legal framework, as this is a mandatory requirement for accessing Portuguese public funds for research, technology and innovation. This requirement may be waived during the application stage (in which case candidates will be required to sign a solemn declaration certifying that they meet this requirement – Template) but the required certificate must be submitted at the time the contract of association is drawn up.

Selection Criteria

Candidates will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • Curriculum vitae: 50%
  • Interview(s): 50%

Selection Committee

The selection of candidates will be carried out by a Selection Committee consisting of the following persons:

1)     Dr. Yury Kolen’ko

2)     Dr. Laura Salonen

3)     Dr. Juliana Sousa

4)     Rita Milhazes – Human Resources

Evaluation process

The evaluation process will follow a four-stage process:

  1. Candidate eligibility check:

Only full applications will be considered for evaluation. The applicant will be responsible for the data submission and validation. The application language is English.

Candidates who do not meet the eligibility requirements will not be included in the CV evaluation.

  1. Curriculum Vitae evaluation:

The top four ranked candidates will be shortlisted for interview, provided however that they pass the thresholds for this stage. The threshold for the curriculum vitae evaluation is 70% of the possible score (i.e., 35). Candidates who do not pass the threshold will be excluded from the evaluation process.
