Biophysical Scientist – Antibody Developability

We are currently seeking a keen, dynamic and self-motivated lab scientist to join the developability profiling group within Molecular Design and Engineering (MDE). The role will be lab-centric and will involve profiling/characterising a panel of biopharmaceuticals based on their biophysical and physiochemical properties, performing interpretations on the generated data and conveying the outcomes to early programme teams.

Within the Biopharm Discovery Unit, the Molecular Design and Engineering (MDE) group takes accountability for antibody engineering and developability profiling prior to candidate selection to continuously improve molecule quality and transform discovered leads into potential therapeutics.

Biopharm Discovery is a department dedicated to the discovery of novel and effective biopharmaceutical medicines. This department comprises several complementary functions focused on the progression of a portfolio of biopharmaceuticals from initial antibody discovery, expression and characterisation to molecular engineering and biological and physiochemical profiling.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience in one or more biophysical techniques such as dynamic light scattering, analytical ultracentrifugation, differential scanning calorimetry, analytical size exclusion chromatography and ideally be experienced in using these to characterise the structure and/or stability of proteins. Although predominantly lab based, the role also requires effective communication skills (both oral and written), organisational, interpersonal and teamworking skills.

Basic Qualifications:

  • MSc/PhD or equivalent in protein analytics, biochemistry, biophysics or a related discipline
  • Experienced scientist with proficiency in protein analytics using one or more of the following methods: mass spectrometry, analytical ultracentrifugation, dynamic/static light scattering, SEC-HPLC, RP-HPLC, fluorescence/UV spectroscopy, capillary isoelectric focussing, etc
  • Good analytical and data interpretation skills
  • Attention to detail in experimental setup; capability to multitask and run multiple experiments in parallel, good organisational and prioritisation skills
  • Quick adaptability in new scientific areas, working across team and the use of lab instrumentation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience of working with therapeutic antibodies
  • Experience of developing miniaturized/high throughput assays
  • Knowledge and/or practical lab experience in Protein purification/CMC
  • Knowledge of antibody sequence/structure-function relationship
  • Understanding of Antibody Discovery processes
