Bioinformatics Facility Manager Department/Location: MRC Toxicology Unit, Cambridge Salary: £41,526-£52,559 Reference: PU23217

Applications are invited for the position of Bioinformatics Facility Manager at the MRC Toxicology Unit. The Bioinformatics Core Facility provides expert bioinformatics technical support to research scientists including data processing, statistical analysis, integration and visualisation of disparate datasets, development of analysis workflows and training.

Recognised within the Unit as a research collaborator, you will play a crucial role in designing experiments and complex analysis. You will have a leadership role in assessing and developing analytical methods to be used by the Bioinformatics Facility, and in determining how those methods are to be deployed within the team.

A degree in a scientific or computational discipline is required together with a postgraduate degree (PhD) and/or significant experience in bioinformatics or computational biology. You will be an excellent communicator, able to consult with non-computational research scientists on experimental design and bioinformatics analysis and an inspiring leader able to develop the team to support the Unit’s research programmes. A proven publication record of meaningful analysis roles in peer reviewed articles is essential.

Good programming or scripting skills are required together with experience in computational analysis of high-throughput molecular biology experiments.

Expert knowledge and ability to lead in at least three of the following areas is essential: - Data analysis – experience with QC, normalization, clustering, classification and downstream analysis, familiarity and use of R/Bioconductor packages. - Sequence bioinformatics – DNA/RNA alignment tools, annotation of sequences/regions with genomic features, genome browsers/visualization. - Programming/scripting – software development, algorithm development, experience with cluster computing. - Statistics – application of statistical tests and models, experience in experimental design. - Bioinformatics tools and databases – practical experience of a range of bioinformatics software packages and database resources.

The Medical Research Council Toxicology Unit is an internationally renowned institution focussed on the delivery of field-changing mechanistic insights into toxicology and disease. This post will initially be based on the Addenbrookes Site, Cambridge, until the Unit moves into the newly refurbished Gleeson building, Tennis Court Road, from November 2020.

This is an open-ended position with MRC funding available up to March 2023 in the first instance.
