News & Views is a highly popular section of Nature that publishes timely, readable and authoritative articles about the latest developments in science, written by specialists for non-specialists. This post involves working as part of a multidisciplinary team of editors to commission and edit News & Views articles about the physical and Earth sciences, working to tight deadlines.
The following qualifications and skills are essential:
• A higher degree (masters degree or PhD) in an area of physics
• Research experience
• Excellent organizational ability and written communication skills
• A critical and lively interest in science in general
Preference will be given to applicants with a demonstrably strong interest in the communication of science.
The main responsibilities will be commissioning News & Views articles, which requires an understanding of what constitutes a breakthrough suitable for bringing to the attention of Nature’s readers; and editing News & Views pieces, which requires awareness of the demands of non-specialist readers, developmental editing skills and tact in dealing with authors.
