We are seeking a Managing Editor for the npj series. The npjs comprise 27 open-access journals that together span a wide range of research, from fundamental physics to clinical research to engineering. Each npj is targeted to a specific scientific community and is launched and run in collaboration with pre-eminent scientists. As Nature Portfolio journals, the npjs focus on strong editorial practice and aim to reach the global scientific community through the publication of high-quality research and timely review and opinion articles. We are now looking for a Managing Editor to help run the health sciences npjs, which include high-impact journals including npj Digital Medicine, npj Genomic Medicine and npj Precision Oncology, plus help with the development and launch of new journals within these spaces.

This is a dynamic and varied role that provides many opportunities for developing strong relationships with the global research community, both with the scientists who work directly on the journals and the broader community of authors, reviewers and readers.

With the support of the Editorial Director and an existing team of Managing Editors, your core responsibilities include:

• Devise and develop a strategy to ensure the success of each journal.

• Oversee the editorial process at the npj series, ensuring that best editorial practice is followed.

• Implement new policies and practices across the journal group.

• Identify, recruit and develop external editors

• Collaborate with this global editorial team to commission content for the journals.

• Engage directly with scientists to promote the journals.

• Maximize journal visibility and reach.

• Develop new journal ideas and contribute to their successful launch.

You should also have:

• A PhD in a scientific discipline in the biomedical sciences or in genomics

• A passion for communicating science.

• A dedication to providing great service to authors, reviewers and readers.

• The interest in working in a team environment.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• A strong ability to think strategically in a data-driven way.

• The ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

• A positive attitude and a willingness to embrace change.

• Prior editorial experience is advantageous.

This position will be based in our London or New York office. The position is offered on a full-time, permanent basis and its starting date is envisaged as soon as possible within the next few months.

Most employees are currently working remotely. Once the offices fully re-open, all employees will be expected to be based in the office in line with our work from home policy.
