The Wyant College of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona invites applications for a tenure/tenure-track faculty position in Optomechanics and Optical Engineering. Applicants will be considered at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor levels commensurate with qualifications. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled.

The Wyant College of Optical Sciences and the University of Arizona have strong records of research and education in optical systems and engineering. Current areas of research in this area span a broad spectrum, including imaging, metrology, sensing and instrumentation systems for scientific, biomedical, manufacturing, consumer and defense applications, and also the fabrication, qualification and deployment of complex optical hardware, including space instrumentation and large-scale telescope systems.

The college is seeking to further strengthen its multidisciplinary research and education program in optomechanical systems and instrumentation, and the successful candidate will be an integral part of this initiative.

Specific examples of research interest include but are not limited to:

  • Novel optomechanical system design, analysis, alignment, testing, and field implementation.
  • Optimization and adaptive dynamic control of optical system configuration and support forces.
  • Novel solutions addressing mechanical, stress, thermal, shock, and vibration analysis of complex optomechanical structures.
  • Additive/subtractive fabrication processes for optical materials, components and devices.

Candidates with research interests that cross boundaries into other disciplines are welcome.

Duties for this tenure/tenure-track position include:

  • Establishing a strong extramurally-funded research program.
  • Establishing a strong teaching record.
  • Participating in both undergraduate and graduate education.
  • Participating in service and outreach for the College.
  • Applicants should have a demonstrated capability to meet these duties, including a clear potential to establish or continue a substantial research program in in his or her field of interest that is capable of attracting program funding from industry and/or government sources. For private sector or government laboratory applicants, while still requiring strong communications skills and a demonstrated history of technical depth and leadership, a lack of a proven teaching and funded-research record could be remedied with other related credentials. We seek an individual who is able to work with and attract a diverse group of undergraduate and graduate students and colleagues. Development of courses pertaining to the candidate’s area of expertise, as well as strong teaching contributions to our core curriculum, is expected.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in Optics, Physical Sciences, Engineering or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience with optomechanical systems and instrumentation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in an industrial or national lab setting.
  • Experience with CAD Modeling (e.g. SolidWorks, Pro/E, Siemans NX, etc.). Experience with optical design software (e.g. Zemax, Code V, LightTools, FRED, etc.).
  • Experience with finite element analysis software (e.g. ANSYS, COMSOL, Nastran, etc.).
