Breeding for Sustainable Cropping Systems

Start Date: July 2020 or as negotiated

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will lead a breeding and genetics program in sustainable cropping systems with a domestic or international focus and will be expected to develop an externally funded research program, release improved cultivars, and contribute to graduate and undergraduate training. A potential concentration on alfalfa and other high-quality forage crops critical for New York’s prominent dairy industry would leverage the legacy of Cornell’s world class forage breeding program and germplasm collections. Many of these crops have polyploid genetics, an area that merits further exploration in research and teaching. Teaching expectations include the responsibility to deliver an existing course, PLBRG 4030 Genetic Improvement of Crop Plants, and to create another course of the candidate’s choosing, in consultation with the chair. This position has a 60:40 research and teaching responsibility.

Abundant opportunities exist to collaborate with Cornell’s Initiative for Digital Agriculture (https://www.digitalagriculture.cornell.edu/) and partner with colleagues having expertise in genomics, robotics, high throughput phenotyping, genomic selection strategies, metagenomics, animal nutrition, and microbiome research.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. is required in plant breeding, plant genetics/genomics or plant molecular biology or related discipline. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work with other researchers in interdisciplinary inquiry, attract extramural support and lead an innovative research/ breeding program. Postdoctoral and/or other relevant experience is desirable, with experience preferred in relevant teaching, student advising, and research. Successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to advancing equity and inclusion.
