The Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, invites applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair tenure-track position at the assistant professor level. We are seeking outstanding candidates with a strong research program in virology or bacteriology. Areas of interest cover a broad range of topics with relevance to significant challenges in health and technological sectors. Antimicrobial resistance and phage therapy is a specific example; however, applicants in each of the aforementioned areas will be considered. The mission of the Department is to provide an enriched environment for research, education and training in the field of infection and immunity that links molecular mechanisms to disease, treatment and prevention.
Applicants must have a PhD, postdoctoral experience and a proven record of high-quality research achievements. The successful candidate will conduct innovative independent research to attract funding and outstanding research trainees, and will contribute to the Department’s undergraduate and graduate programs, including teaching and assisting with administration. There will also be significant opportunities for collaborations with several multidisciplinary research groups within the University, such as the Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology.
A competitive start-up package and research support, along with the opportunity to apply for infrastructure support from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to help acquire state-of-the-art equipment, will be provided. The successful candidate will be appointed as a faculty member in the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology, contingent on ongoing government funding.
The successful candidate will also be nominated for a Tier 2 CRC. Nominations for CRC’s are subject to review by the CRC secretariat and appointments are conditional upon their approval. Tier 2 Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars, i.e. candidates must have been an active researcher in the field for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination. Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree and where career interruptions exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc. may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 CRC assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process.
