Assistant Professor – Surface Engineering

The Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto invites applications for one full-time, tenure stream faculty position in the area of Surface Engineering at the rank of Assistant Professor, starting July 1, 2020, or shortly thereafter.

The successful candidate will be expected to join the Centre for Advanced Coating Technologies (http://cact.utoronto.ca), to contribute to research, promote collaboration with industry and governmental institutions, and maintain and expand the Centre’s international partnerships.

Candidates must have a PhD in mechanical engineering, materials engineering, or a related discipline, by date of appointment or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. In particular, the successful candidate will demonstrate research excellence in fundamental and applied research in surface engineering broadly, with expertise in both materials characterization and coating process development and modeling. The candidate is expected to establish and maintain an outstanding, competitive, innovative, independent, externally funded, and internationally leading research program. We are seeking candidates whose research and teaching will complement and strengthen our existing departmental strengths in the areas of Thermofluids and Materials. It is preferred that candidates have an undergraduate degree in engineering and be eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer.

The successful candidate will be involved in undergraduate and graduate teaching, research, and departmental service.

The successful candidate must provide evidence of excellence in research, primarily by a record of published papers in top-ranked and field relevant journals, or a research pipeline that is at high international levels, the submitted research statement, and strong letters of reference from referees of high standing. Further evidence of research excellence can be demonstrated by participation in top conferences, awards and accolades, and presenting research at other highly ranked schools.

Excellence in teaching will be demonstrated by a strong statement of teaching philosophy, sample syllabi, excellent teaching evaluations, strong endorsements from referees, and the teaching dossier submitted as part of the Application.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
