UMESCIA offers a scientific and educational program that is specifically designed to provide training and research options at the interface between natural sciences and clinical application.

In its initial phase, UMESciA welcomes applications for 9 Postdoc positions for Medical Scientists (who may come from all natural science and life science areas, including data science and bioinformatics). The goal of this 2-years Postdoc training is the introduction into current and timely research themes and innovative technologies at the intersection of basic and clinical research. The Medical Scientists in UMESciA (https://www.uni-due.de/med/umescia/) will closely interact with the Clinical Scientists of the UMEA program (Universitätsmedizin Essen Clinician Scientist Academy; https://www.uni-due.de/med/umea/index.php) to foster direct access to clinical biosamples and deep understanding of clinically relevant research topics. The scientific activities are accompanied by a structured qualification program and awarded with a certificate at the end of the 2 year program. Projects and candidates will be reviewed and evaluated by the UMESciA Board after 2 years and a selected number of candidates may enter into a second two-year funding phase, based on scientific merit and achievements. Parallel academic qualification towards habilitation is supported by UMESciA. The Medical Faculty is currently setting up options up to the W2-Professorship level for excellent candidates after completion of the full 4 year program.

Research in UMESciA will primarily be conducted within the oncology focus research area with potential collaborations into the other four research focus areas of the faculty: cardiovascular medicine, transplantation, infectiology/immunology and translational neuro and behavioral sciences.

The research activities will take place at the Faculty of Medicine/ University Hospital Essen and 2 positions at the University Essen at the Faculty of Chemistry or the Faculty of Biology.

The primary research scheme of UMESciA will address translational research questions in biologic therapies of cancer with the aim to improve mechanistic understanding of those therapies, develop new biomarkers of response and improve patient selection. These positions are ideal for candidates, who have already published in high-ranking journals and now wish to continue their career in one of the leading cancer centers in Germany. You will be embedded into a vibrant network of translational researchers with active interconnection to the local German Cancer Consortium and Clinician Scientist Programs.
