The University Hospital Essen offers first class medical services in the Ruhr metropolis. Every year, 225.000 patients are treated in 30 clinics, 27 institutes and specialized centers. The over 8.000 employees offer medical care with state-of-the art diagnostics and therapies, which meet highest international standards. Patient care is connected with basic and translational research at an internationally competitive level.
The Sauer Laboratory for Clinical Research and Real-world Evidence (CARE), a multi-disciplinary collaboration between the Department of Hematology and Stem Cell Transplan-tation and the Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (IKIM) is currently seeking a
PhD Student (m/f/d)
(pay grade: 13 TV-L / 65% – temporary employment)
The pay grade classification depends on the personal and collective legal prerequisites. The em-ployment is provided for the duration of a third-party funded until 31.07.2026. An extension might be possible according to available funding and the maximum employment duration as giv-en by laws regarding scientific fixed-term contracts (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz).
Activities and responsibilities:
The project pilots the use of Essen University Hospital’s electronic health records (EHR) data to compare and improve patient trajectories and treatments. The IKIM has already integrated most hospital databases into FHIR, however a comprehensive clinical validation has only started re-cently. The first step will therefore be the completion of data integration, followed by a pilot study to derive the optimal antibiotic therapy for patients with cancer. Ultimately, we aim to establish a clinically validated research pipeline that can be used for fast cohort building and advanced statis-tical modelling across various therapeutic areas and disciplines.
Our group:
We are a newly formed research group with an open, respectful, lively atmosphere. Our work is at the crossroads of clinical medicine and data science, as we believe that routinely collective data can provide novel insights and improve patient care. The initial team will be comprised of the clinical lead, the PhD student, and a research assistant. Close collaboration with (bio-)informaticians at the IKIM is ensured.
Your profile:
• Completed Diploma or Master degree in data-science, bioinformatics, statistics or a re-lated field
• Advanced statistical modelling in Python or R, such as causal inference or reinforcement learning. Experience working with FHIR is a plus
• Solid scientific English skills, German is a plus
• Courage to learn, to be open, creative, and pro-active in your research
• Interest in leveraging data science to improve patient outcomes
We offer:
• An open, friendly and motivating environment with transparent communication
• Supervision and support in academia as needed
• Opportunity to pursuit one’s own methodological interest within the project’s scope
• Interdisciplinary networking and multiple international collaborations, include Harvard, MIT, Virginia Tech and Amsterdam UMC
The University Hospital Essen is an equal opportunity employer. Female scientists are particularly encouraged to apply. The participation in secondary employment depends on the „Hochschul-nebentätigkeitsverordnung“ of North-Rhine Westphalia. Disabled applicants will be preferentially considered in case of equivalent qualification.
