Job description:


The DLR Institute for the Protection of Maritime Infrastructures in Bremerhaven develops concepts, procedures and technologies that serve both to assess and improve the security of maritime infrastructures, taking into account the three levels of man, technology and the overall system.


As part of your thesis, your task will be estimating the energy consumption of Roll on / Roll off and passenger (RoPax) ferries in Europe employing as main input position and speed information emitted by their Automatic Identification System (AIS). This information will be used together with speed modelling to estimate the energy requirements of the ships under certain operational conditions and to propose future alternatives for their energy supply using low-carbon technologies.


Your responsibilities within this project:


processing of AIS data from the selected type of ship modelling the power profile of different ships according to their characteristics employing AIS data to model energy use of the ships producing a localized profile of energy demand analyzing variations of the operational profile of the ships throughout the year proposing future alternatives for the energy supply of the studied routes employing low-carbon technologies
