In the Energy Systems Analysis division at the DLR Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics we address a broad spectrum of issues related to energy economics and energy policy. In order to model and assess pathways towards a sustainable future energy system, techno-economic, but also social and various environmental criteria have to be taken into account.


With the expansion of distributed generation of renewable energies as one of the pillars of energy transition, the share of locally consumed electricity is increasing. The local consumption of electricity can be for instance inside a building or in a wider geographical region (e.g. a community energy system). This self-consumption is on one hand highly affected by the available technologies (such as heat pumps and battery systems) inside the community. On the other hand, the induced taxes and levies as well as incentives such as feed-in tariff determine the profitability of self-consumption. Therefore the aim of this thesis is to investigate how the political frameworks affect the self-consumption in various community energy systems in Germany. For this analysis an existing community energy system model will be applied.    During your thesis you will work on the following subtasks:  


Literature review and evaluation of current studies on the self-consumption regulations and community energy systems in Germany Development of meaningful scenarios, which describe community energy systems’ political framework and technological structure Application of the community energy system model for the evaluation of developed scenarios Statistical evaluations of the results Comprehensible documentation and presentation of scientific results
