The C²A²S²E department develops numerical methods for multidisciplinary simulation and optimization of air vehicles. Besides physical modeling of complex flows and the development of modern numerical algorithms, our research activities cover the software-based integration of all relevant disciplines, the development of efficient optimization strategies as well as surrogate modeling based on higher fidelity methods.
The DLR hybrid computational fluid dynamics code TAU is developed by our department. TAU is routinely applied to a wide range of flows in industries, research institutes and academia. Currently, its successor, CODA, is designed and developed at our department in cooperation with Airbus and ONERA. The offered position focuses on scientific research and implementation work to extend the CFD code CODA for efficient simulation of incompressible flows. The challenge is to program a coupled, incompressible solver (the PDEs are solved as a coupled system of equations). A successful implementation of the coupled solver promises a high degree of novelty as incompressible solvers by default rely on the decoupling of PDEs. The coupled solution of the system of PDEs is preferred to foster synergies with the existing compressible solver in CODA.
A basic prototype of the coupled incompressible solver is available. The objective of the position is to further develop the prototype to obtain a validated and operational incompressible solver that is integrated into the productive software CODA. A successful implementation mandates expertise and experience in numerical methods, programming and software development.
