Job description:

Free Space Optical (FSO) communications not only overcomes the bandwidth limitations of RF systems, but also offers improved power efficiency, security and high data rates compared to their traditional counterparts. These characteristics are also of very high interest for satellite communications and there is a growing interest for such systems in the scientific community. The Optical Communication Systems Group at the Institute of Communications and Navigation has been developing an optical satellite payload, with a primary goal of demonstrating a high speed optical downlink and uplink between a satellite and Earth.


In the framework of this thesis the existing design will be further developed, with the end goal of developing a lab demonstrator for the system. The thesis shall investigate into the realization of a bidirectional communication system with very high data rates (10 Gbps+).
