The Milieu Interieur (MI) Consortium is recruiting two post-doctoral researchers in computational biology to understand complex traits related to immune variation at Institut Pasteur, Paris. The positions are available in the Units of Human Evolutionary Genetics (Quintana-Murci Lab) and Immunobiology of Dendritic Cells (Duffy Lab).

The aim of MI is to better understand the fundamental mechanisms behind inter-individual differences in immune responses, and apply these discoveries to relevant clinical questions. To achieve this, the MI project has established a rich sample repository and data-warehouse, supporting ongoing integrative research in systems immunology and personalized medicine ( This includes high-coverage whole-genome sequencing, whole metagenomic microbiome sequencing, transcriptional, proteomic and epigenetic data from 1,000 healthy donors – stratified by age (5 decades of life, from 20 to 70 years old) and sex – as well as detailed sociodemographic and biological parameters. Our consortium benefits from a large and outstanding community of researchers in genomics, population genetics, immunology, microbiology, and computational biology.

Current projects will focus on:

  • Quantitative genetics.* Dissecting the contribution of rare/common variants, together with other non-genetic factors (including sex, age, lifestyle habits, latent infections, etc.) to variation in molecular phenotypes (gene expression, alternative splicing and DNA methylation) related to infection and immune stimulation. It aims to define the genetic architecture of expression phenotypes in the context of GxE interactions, and explore the (causal) relationships between genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors accounting for immune response heterogeneity.
  • Systems immunology.* Integrating proteomic, transcriptomic, cellular and microbiome data sets from healthy donor cohorts of European and African origins to quantify determinants of immunological variance across diverse populations. With a view to translational applications comparison studies will also be performed with matching data sets from autoimmune and chronically infected patients. This combined approach will help to determine how and why immune variability may result in different clinical outcomes.


- Ph.D. in quantitative genomics, statistical genomics, bioinformatics, computational biology or immunology
- Strong programming and bioinformatics skills (R and Bash scripting, cluster computing)
- Proficiency in English.

Duration: 2 years funding are available, and support will be provided to become self-financed through competitive fellowship applications.
