2 PostDocs – Systems Biology and Metabolism

Brief description of field of application:
Located in the heart of Berlin, the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin is one of Europe’s largest and most research-intensive medical faculties. The Ralser’s laboratory is world-renowned for its studies that understanding how cellular metabolism, the network of biochemical reactions in the cell, is regulated, how it evolved, and how it maintains functional integrity in the ever-changing environment the cell is exposed to. This research addresses fundamental problems in the life sciences, where knowledge about cellular metabolic systems is required to develop new therapeutics and to understand the molecular basis of disease.
Your area of responsibility:
We are looking for two enthusiastic postdoctoral scientists to join Prof. Markus Ralser’s laboratory at the Charitè – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Institute for Biochemistry. We have developed mass-spectrometry based methods that can very effectively measure thousands of quantitative proteomes and found computational strategies to link these to cellular metabolism. We will now apply to them to understand how protein expression dynamics influence metabolism. We will screen proteomic changes in thousands of yeast strains as well as human samples, and link them to mechanistically understand the changes in metabolism and predict the phenotypes they create. We encourage the application of both postdocs with an experimental, analytical, as well as computational background. The daily work could be in systematic metabolism research, the biological application of machine learning, or ‘big data’ analysis. The post is, hence, ideal for someone with a computational or experimental background to get into the generation or analysis of large biological datasets, into the conduction of functional genomics experiments, and into the prediction of phenotypes from multi-omics data. The postholders will also be working closely with the recently established ‘Nationaler Forschungskern Massenspektrometrie’, in the generation and analysis of clinical proteomics data for medical and epidemiological studies.
- PhD, or Research Doctorate, in the basic sciences
- Productivity documented in published research articles or patents;
- Experienced in the handling or generation or analysis of large and systematic experiments
- Desirable are experimental skills in Microbiology and Biochemistry
