Three Assistant Professors in Ecology, Evolution or Organismal Biology

The Department of Biology at Duke University in Durham, NC is planning to hire three Assistant Professors in ecology, evolution, and/or organismal biology. We will consider all candidates in these disciplines, but we are especially interested in candidates with a focus on plant and/or fungal biology. Successful candidates will articulate how their scholarship will enrich, and be enriched by, the breadth of expertise among existing faculty in our department, and how their teaching and mentoring efforts will support our undergraduate and graduate students.

Duke Biology is the intellectual home for more than 50 faculty members whose research programs span the discipline of Biology (including developmental biology, cell biology, molecular biology, ecology, evolution, organismal biology, and genomics). Many of our biologists take advantage of our department’s Research Greenhouses [https://biology.duke.edu/facilities/research-greenhouses] and Phytotron [https://biology.duke.edu/facilities/phytotron] or conduct research within the 7000-acre Duke Forest Teaching and Research Laboratory [https://dukeforest.duke.edu/], or the Duke Marine Lab [https://nicholas.duke.edu/marinelab]. More than 100 PhD students work with Biology faculty through the Biology PhD program and multiple interdisciplinary training programs. Our undergraduate major graduates ~175 students annually with more than half of our majors conducting independent research. Learn more about Duke Biology at our website https://biology.duke.edu/.

Required Documents

Cover Letter: This one-page document is your first introduction to the department and the search committee. Be specific but brief in explaining your interest in the position, your pertinent skills and vision, and a summary of what makes you a competitive applicant. Include your contact information, and if comfortable, add your preferred name and pronouns.

Curriculum Vitae: The CV is a document that describes your career trajectory to date. You should include details about where you have completed previous academic training, lists of publications and presentations, awards and grants received, courses taught, and service activities conducted.

Research Statement: This 2-3 page document should focus on your current as well as your future research agenda. Highlight your main accomplishments and discuss the goals of your research program. We are interested in your short term projects (next 5-7 years) but also your vision for the next 30 years (we want people to build their careers here at Duke!). Remember that we are a diverse group of biologists and it is in your interest to get as many people excited about your science as possible. It is good practice to balance the level of details while making sure that it is still understandable by a broad group of educated biologists.

Teaching and Mentoring Statement: In this 1-2 page statement you should describe your teaching philosophy, experiences, and future plans for teaching and mentoring at both undergraduate and graduate levels. We are interested in candidates who not only have experience implementing evidence-based pedagogies in their teaching, but who also can provide examples of how their teaching philosophy has led to specific teaching innovations.

Service and Outreach Statement: In one page or less, please share with us your approaches, training, and experiences in leading and participating in inclusive and equitable recruitment programs, research groups, classrooms, mentoring, and service interactions, in accordance with Duke’s Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion.
