The Mullighan Lab seeks a talented experimental biologist who is excited about contributing new knowledge in the field of high-risk leukemia research. The Mullighan Lab is at the forefront of genomics discovery in pediatric leukemia and invests heavily in translating newly discovered genomic alterations to new therapeutic strategies. A major component of this work is establishing new genetically informed experimental models to study and understand how diverse genetic mutations cause different forms of leukemia. The candidate will work on a project related to a specific alteration in lineage ambiguous leukemia, for which several new models have been recently established. The candidate will work to characterize these models and drive new directions in the project. This will include extensive mouse work, as well as routine cell culture and molecular biology approaches, including flow cytometry. The candidate will receive adequate training as needed and will be supervised by a senior staff member in all areas of the project. The candidate will also have access to a large breadth of expertise within the Mullighan Lab to help ensure the candidate’s success.

About you
The ideal candidate will be highly motivated to drive a project forward, an independent and critical thinker, an excellent communicator, and eager to learn new biology and technical approaches to make impactful contributions towards improving outcomes of children with high-risk leukemia. The ideal candidate will have a background in leukemia or hematopoiesis research, but this is not required. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in working with mice and cell culture.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Perform basic molecular biology techniques, including plasmid preparation, viral transduction, isolation of RNA and DNA, western blot, immunoprecipitation for mass-spec analysis, PCR, qPCR, flow cytometry
  • Manages several mouse colonies related to characterization of a new mouse model, including mouse breeding, genotyping, and isolation and characterization of hematopoietic cells from various tissues
  • Preparation, acquisition and analysis of flow cytometric data
  • Maintain organized records of all experiments and data generated
  • Assist in the interpretation of results
  • Assist in developing future directions of the project based on current results
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance in the lab
  • Maintains excellent communication with other lab members involved in the project

Opportunities for Professional Growth

  • The candidate will be given opportunities to develop new experimental skills, including emerging next-generation sequencing techniques (CUT&RUN, single cell sequencing).
  • If desired, the candidate will be given opportunities to learn basic computational analysis of genomics data.
  • The candidate will be given opportunities to attend and present at scientific conferences in the areas of leukemia research (e.g. Annual Society of Hematology (ASH) meeting, the International Society for Experimental Hematology (ISEH) meeting).
  • The candidate will be given opportunities for routine oral presentations at St. Jude through participation in work-in-progress style Departmental meetings and Mullighan Lab meetings

This Position May be Ideal For:

  • Recent college graduates with extensive laboratory experience looking to establish a track record of research productivity, including gaining high-position authorships on publications.
  • Recent PhDs or research staff looking for an enriching, collaborative, and interdisciplinary lab environment committed to discovering new biology in the field of high-risk leukemia research.
