About the Role:
Springer Nature, the publisher of Nature, is looking to recruit a Chief Editor for a new Nature Reviews journal – Nature Reviews Respiratory Medicine – that will launch in January 2026.
The journal will have a broad scope of interest to clinical, translational and industry-based researchers, and those who need to keep up to date with the latest clinical trials, who are interested in (respiratory) global health, and who want to keep abreast of the latest advances in diagnostics and therapies for diseases of the respiratory tract. Core topics include – but are not limited to - asthma, COPD, chronic rhinosinusitis, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, critical care medicine, infections of the respiratory tract, lung cancer and neoplasms of respiratory and intrathoracic organs, lung fibrosis, diseases of pulmonary circulation including pulmonary embolism, pulmonary hypertension and cor pulmonale, and sleep apnoea syndrome.
Role Responsibilities:
The Chief Editor is responsible for recruiting, training and leading a skilled and enthusiastic editorial team and for developing the editorial strategy and content of the journal. The successful applicant will work closely with their journal editorial team on all aspects of the editorial process, including commissioning, manuscript editing of Reviews and Comment-type articles, and writing for the journal.
A key aspect of the job is interaction with the research community, including attending international conferences and organizing site visits. The successful candidate must have excellent interpersonal and networking skills and be prepared to travel when appropriate and required. Experience, Skills, & Qualifications:
- A PhD or medical degree, a strong research background, and connections with relevant research communities.
- Previous editorial experience and experience with line management would be beneficial.
- Broad knowledge of the topics covered by the journal.
- Excellent literary and verbal communication skills.
- A commitment to the communication of scientific ideas, and an understanding of the Nature Reviews ethos and USPs.
- Outstanding leadership qualities.
- A positive attitude to change.
- Innovative and creative ideas for the future development of the journal.

- A 1,500-word vision statement for the journal (including an outline of the editorial strategy for launch)
- 10 ideas for Review articles to commission that cover the breadth of the journal (including a brief (~50-60 words) description of the scope of the article and author suggestions).

US Annualized Base Salary Range: $120,000 - $125,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education and skill level. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
