Call for applications for the position of Rector of the Medical University of Innsbruck for the term of office from 1 October 2025 to 30 September 2029
With around 3,400 students and more than 2,300 employees, the Medical University of Innsbruck is the most important medical research and educational institution in western Austria. The Medical University of Innsbruck offers the best conditions for successful research, study and teaching at an attractive location. Its central tasks include teaching and training as well as research at the highest level and the continuous improvement of cuttingedge medicine. The organisational units are divided into a medical-theoretical area, a clinical area and other (service) facilities.
As of 1 October 2025, the position of Rector of the Medical University of Innsbruck is to be occupied
in accordance with the Austrian Universities Act (Universitätsgesetz) of 2002 (Austrian Federal
Law Gazette BGBI. I No. 120/2002 as amended).
The Rector is the supreme body of the University alongside the University Council, the Senate and the Rectorate. He/she is the chairperson as well as spokesperson of the Rectorate. The Rectorate manages the university and represents it externally; it consists of the Rector and up to four Vice-Rectors.
The Rector's duties include in particular:
- exercising the function of the highest superior of all university staff
- managing the office of the university
- establishment of the Rectorate with Vice-Rectors to manage the University as a team
- concluding performance agreements with the responsible Federal Ministry as the basis for budget planning
- organisation of the framework conditions for research, teaching and patient care
- cooperation with Tirol Kliniken with regard to the joint clinical area
- selection decision from appointment proposals of the appointment committees
- implementation of the requirement to promote women
- creation of an attractive and modern working environment and creation of workplace models that promote inclusion
Only a person with international experience, knowledge of the Austrian and European university system and the ability to manage a university in organisational and economic terms may be elected as Rector in accordance with section 23 para. 2 of the Austrian Universities Act of 2002.
Applicants must have the following qualifications
- completed doctoral studies or an equivalent qualification, preferably in human medicine or related disciplines
- sound management experience, preferably in the field of teaching and research at colleges and universities or in innovative companies
- comprehensive knowledge/experience in science and/or healthcare
- demonstrable qualifications to align the university towards excellence as well as digitalisation and sustainability
- knowledge of German and English (business fluent)
Applications should clearly demonstrate the extent to which the applicant fulfils the above requirements and the desired profile of qualifications and skills.
In addition to the usual application documents, applicants are expected to submit a written concept regarding their ideas on the intended fulfilment of the position and the further development of the Medical University of Innsbruck. The concept must also include considerations on the organisation and distribution of tasks of the Rectorate, which must have the relevant competences in the field of science as well as management and administrative competences.
Depending on qualifications and experience, an annual gross salary of € 250,000.00 or more is envisaged for the position of Rector of the Medical University of Innsbruck.
Applicants must be prepared to take part in a public hearing and present their ideas on the fulfilment of the position, the structure and division of responsibilities within the Rectorate and the positioning and development of the Medical University of Innsbruck.
The Rector is elected by the University Council on the recommendation of the Senate of the Medical University of Innsbruck following a selection procedure. The term of office is four years and begins on 1 October 2025. Reappointment is permitted. The function of Rector is exercised in full-time employment at the Medical University of Innsbruck. The exercise of the function of a rector is incompatible with the exercise of gainful secondary employment.
Travelling and accommodation costs and other expenses incurred in connection with the application will only be reimbursed if they are incurred in connection with an invitation to a hearing. Travelling expenses for the hearings will be reimbursed. The application documents remain at the Medical University of Innsbruck.
