Job Title: Research Manager, Open Access

About the role
The Open Access team enables one of the fastest growing areas at Springer Nature. It has responsibility for the overall OA business including business strategy, revenue, performance monitoring, business models, policies, and managing OA transition. Part of the wider commercial business, the OA group works in close coordination with both publishing and sales teams.
As Research Manager, you will be the expert on external Open Access (OA) policy, funding, and competitor developments, conducting research and analysis to inform Springer Nature’s OA policy and strategy, and communicating insights and implications for the business. You will also play a key role in translating market intelligence into action, identifying opportunities for activities that support our OA transition. This role reports to the Head of OA policy and manages the Research Coordinator, working closely with colleagues across the OA team and wider business.
This role is offered on a full-time permanent basis and can be located in our Berlin, London or New York office (hybrid working model).
Responsibilities include:
- Monitor and analyse external OA policy, funding, and competitor developments across both journals and books
- Line-manage and work with the Research Coordinator to ensure key external OA developments are communicated to relevant colleagues
- Proactively identify implications of external landscape developments for the business, highlighting areas of opportunity and risks to relevant colleagues
- Conduct research and analysis to enable OA policy and strategy development
- Ownership and management of the ‘Open Access Policy Database’, an Excel database of research funder and institutional OA requirements and OA publication funding
- Identify relevant OA consultations and surveys (e.g. US federal agencies, UKRI OA policy consultation),and coordinate submissions from Springer Nature
- Attend industry webinars, events and conferences relevant to open research
- Act as a source of expertise on OA funding and institutional policy, providing support for more complex internal policy queries that are raised to the OA team.
Experience, Skills & Qualifications:
Essential
- Proven experience conducting research and analysis projects with a keen ability to quickly assimilate and digest information and draw out relevant insights
- Strong knowledge and understanding of the Academic Open Access publishing landscape, particularly OA funding and policy developments with an understanding of wider open research issues and developments
- Excellent communication skills, able to effectively convey information verbally and in writing to different audiences
- Strong Microsoft PowerPoint skills, and a good understanding of Excel
- Numerate, and confident reading and interpreting data
- Able to take initiative and work independently and within a team
- Effective networker, who can build relationships within the team and with colleagues across the business
- Good organisation and the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and juggle priorities
Desirable
- Experience working in academic publishing and open access is desirable
- Line-management experience would be a bonus
- Familiarity using AI tools and LLMs for digesting content and summarising developments is desirable
