About Springer Nature Group

Springer Nature opens the doors to discovery for researchers, educators, clinicians and other professionals. Every day, around the globe, our imprints, books, journals, platforms and technology solutions reach millions of people. For over 175 years our brands and imprints have been a trusted source of knowledge to these communities and today, more than ever, we see it as our responsibility to ensure that fundamental knowledge can be found, verified, understood and used by our communities – enabling them to improve outcomes, make progress, and benefit the generations that follow.

Nature Physics is seeking an Associate or Senior Editor to join its editorial team. The journal publishes high-quality papers in all areas of physics and related fields and also features commentary and analysis from and for the wider physics community. For more information about the journal, see our website (

Applicants must have a PhD in a physics-related discipline and the ideal candidate will have expertise in condensed-matter physics, quantum physics, materials science, optical physics or photonics, but we welcome outstanding candidates in all areas of physics. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate a general interest in other areas of research beyond their own. Postdoctoral experience may be an advantage but is not required. Editorial experience is also not required, although applicants with significant editorial experience are encouraged to apply and will be considered for a Senior Editor position.

The successful candidate will report to the Chief Editor of the journal. They will handle original research papers and work both independently and closely with other editors on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and overseeing peer review. They will also be involved in the commissioning and editing of Review, Comment and News & Views articles, as well as writing editorial content for the journal.

This is a challenging and intellectually stimulating role that calls for a highly motivated individual with demonstrable literary skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks in a timely fashion and a keen interest in the practice and communication of science. A key aspect of the job is liaising with the research community through laboratory visits and international conferences, therefore the successful candidate must be confident and enthusiastic about communicating with fellow scientists and willing to travel (when appropriate and required).

This role can be located in our Shanghai, Beijing, Berlin, or Heidelberg offices based on a hybrid working pattern and on a full-time, permanent basis.

Further details regarding benefits and hybrid working in your preference of location will be discussed during the interview process.

To apply please send the following:

1. A cover letter explaining your interest in the job, salary expectation and preferred office location.

2. A CV detailing your education, relevant employment history and any other achievements that you feel demonstrates your suitability for the position.

3. A 300-word Research Highlight in the style of Nature Physics covering a peer-reviewed research paper that has caught your attention recently. The paper you highlight should not be from your own (or previous) research group or from Nature Physics and should be on a topic that you find interesting and exciting. The highlight should explain the significance and implications of the research to someone who is not a specialist in the subject.

Closing Date for applications: 9th August, 2024
