The position is available in the group of Prof. Dr. Stefan Karpitschka ( and part of a project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) in the context of Priority Programme (SPP) 2451, studying actuators made of adaptive living materials. The research is highly interdisciplinary, at the intersection of bioengineering, statistical physics, active matter research, and biological physics. Besides being embedded in a priority programme, the project also strongly connects to the “Centre for the Advanced Study of Collective Behaviour”, a Cluster of Excellence at the University of Konstanz.

Your Responsibilities

  • Designing and conducting experiments on the mechanics, motility, and self-organization of self-propelling, living filaments
  • Time-lapse and force microscopy
  • Analysis of image data with deep learning
  • Interpretation of the results in the context of current literature
  • Supervision of student assistants
  • Presentation of results at workshops and conferences
  • Publication of results in high quality scientific journals

Your Competencies

  • Master degree in physics or a related field
  • Coding skills (preferably python)
  • Passion for experimental and interdisciplinary research
  • Curiosity-driven
  • Hands-on approach
  • Strong written and oral communications skills in English
