At the Faculty of Biological Sciences of Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Germany, a

W1 Professorship (with tenure track to W2) for Pharmaceutical Technology

is to be filled at the next possible date.

The applicant (m/f/d) should have an outstanding, thematically relevant doctorate in pharmaceutical technology and, if possible, existing international research collaborations and/or experience. Indicators for an international publication track record and high-quality teaching and supervision of students and doctoral candidates are expected. Experience in the acquisition of third-party funding is an advantage. The research focus should be within a current area of pharmaceutical technology. Here, new technological processes, innovative materials and novel formulations as well as their characterisation and application should be a central theme to strengthen and complement the existing scientific strengths at the institute.

Registration as a pharmacist and international research experience are particularly desirable. The position involves teaching pharmaceutical technology in German as part of our accredited pharmacy course. In addition, students are to be supervised as part of the pharmacy diploma programme.

During their tenure, the candidate is expected to contribute to the wider academic, scholarly and professional needs of the Institute. Successful applicants will contribute to the Institute’s portfolio of grant awards, scientific publications and cooperate closely with members of the institute, the faculty and neighbouring faculties, primarily medicine and chemistry, in the field of innovative materials, microbiology or aging research. The willingness to cooperate with groups of subject-related areas within the university and non-university institutes, such as the Leibniz Institutes for Aging Research, Natural Product Research and Infection Biology and Photonic Technologies, and the associated priorities of university research is expected. The appointee will strengthen the University’s focus area “Life” and be fully committed to teaching and research in this area.

To be eligible for the position, candidates must have a completed university degree, pedagogical aptitude and a particular aptitude for academic work, which is typically demonstrated by an outstanding doctoral degree. The total period of doctoral studies and employment should not exceed six years. The professorship is initially limited to four years. After a positive interim evaluation, the position will be extended by a further two years. Subject to a positive tenure track evaluation within six years, the appointee will be promoted to a permanent W2 professorship without the position being readvertised.

Friedrich Schiller University Jena is committed to increasing the number of women in research and teaching. Therefore, the University actively encourages qualified female scientists to apply. Applicants with disabilities will be given preference to other candidates with equal qualifications.

Applications in German or English with the usual documents such as curriculum vitae, copies of certificates and diplomas, publication list including selected reprints, list of courses and teaching evaluation, list of third-party funding, research and teaching concepts are to be submitted electronically to the University’s Appointment Portal at

no later than 5 August 2024. They should be addressed to:
