Job Details

The Department of Medical and Translational Biology (MTB) at Umeå University announces a postdoctoral scholarship in cognitive neuroscience of aging. MTB offers an active and creative research and educational environment for both employees and students. More information about the department can be found on our website Department of Medical and Translational Biology (umu.se).

The current position is in Alireza Salami’s research group at the Wallenberg Center for Molecular Medicine (WCMM; https://www.umu.se/en/wallenberg-centre-for-molecular-medicine/) and the Umeå Center for Functional Brain Imaging (https://www.umu.se/en/umea-center-for-functional-brain-imaging/).
WCMM conducts research in various research arenas, including cancer, infectious diseases, and nervous system diseases.

Description of the project

The project investigates neural and molecular basis of cognitive decline in aging using longitudinal data. Furthermore, we aim to use AI-based methods to predict post-synaptic markers of dopamine (D1-like receptors from D2-like receptors and vice versa) from each other. This project will use a unique longitudinal dataset from the DyNAMiC (and COBRA) projects with extensive MRI, PET, and cognitive test battery (http://www.alirezasalamilab.com/project1.html).

The incumbent is expected to contribute to all aspects of research, including analysis of brain imaging data, interpretation, and publication of results. The applicant should be able to integrate both independently and as part of the research group.

Qualifications

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with hands-on experience with the latest MRI techniques as well as AI-based methods.

The applicant is required to:

  • Have a PhD degree in Cognitive Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, or another area closely related to the current project. Priority will be given to applicants who graduated within three years before the application deadline or will graduate not later than September 1st, 2024.
  • Have experience in neuroimaging and/or AI-based methods. The applicant with documentation of such an experience via a published paper(s) will be given priority.
  • Is capable of statistics and communication in written and spoken scientific English.

Emphasis will also be placed on the applicant's suitability for the current project and ability to collaborate.

Application and conditions

The scholarship is valid for 2 years with funds through the Kempe Foundation. Starting will be September 2024, or as otherwise agreed. Send your application as a pdf, marked with the reference number FS 2.1.7-1757-23, both in the document and in the subject line of the email, to medel@diarie.umu.se. Your application can be written in English (preferably) or Swedish. Application deadline is August 5th 2024.

The application should include:

  • A brief cover letter (about one page) describing the applicant's research experience, research interest and suitability for the project.
  • Curriculum vitae which includes degrees, positions, list of publications, as well as names and contact information for two references.
