Science Communications Officer (Internal)

Medical Research Council (MRC) - Laboratory of Medical Sciences (LMS)

Salary: £28,498 - £30,201 plus London Allowances (£3,913 & £1,472) per annum

Permanent, full time (36 hours per week)

The opportunity

How would you like to become our new Science Communications Officer for Internal Communications? You will be working within our Grants, Engagement and Communications (GECo) facility to champion scientific writing, create content and engage staff and wider publics. You’ll achieve this by taking research findings to communicate exciting discoveries to broad audiences, via news outlets, social media, our website and public engagement.

We have two permanent full-time roles available, one with a focus on external communications, and one who will champion communications and engagement with and for LMS staff. Although the roles are separate, there will be overlap in responsibilities and when we are working on big projects we deliver as a team.

Science Communications Officer (Internal)

You will become the central focus for communications and engagement with and between staff at the LMS. You’ll be responsible for supporting our committees, creating weekly and monthly newsletters and creatively engaging with staff to get their science to wider audiences. You’ll develop and manage our intranet (MS Sharepoint) and digital screens, and ensure that staff are supported by transparent communications across the institute to do their best work.

Introducing GECo

As our new Science Communications Officer you’ll be based in the Grants, Engagement and Communications Team (GECo) at the LMS. The LMS is a world-leading research institute, and we want you to be involved in working with staff to generate engagement opportunities, (such as our recent Pop-Up Shop, The Gene Home), supporting staff networks through committee membership and internal newsletters and developing our intranet sharepoint site to be a focus and support for staff. Help us make our science meaningful for more people, reach wider audiences, and build our brand. Use your ideas and creativity for the greater good of science and research, and we’ll help you build your kudos as a key member of the team.

Science meets communication

This is a fantastic opportunity for ambitious communications specialists with a specialism in biomedical science. This is a chance for you to make your mark as an innovative science communicator.

An understanding of biomedical science and how to creatively communicate research is essential. You’ll also be a relationship builder, and someone who enjoys getting to know people and learning what makes the LMS tick. Good project management skills and an aptitude for using digital tools to create your work are also vital.

MRC and LMS offers benefits including 30 days annual leave, pension scheme, family friendly policies, EdenRed discounts for high street/online shopping, wellbeing support, and access to an employee assistance programme scheme.

This role does not meet the eligibility requirements for Skilled Worker visa certificate of sponsorship under UKVI legislation. Therefore, we will not be able to sponsor individuals who require right to work in the UK to carry out this role.
