About the Brand:
Springer Nature is a leading academic publishing company committed to advancing discovery and knowledge sharing. Our Open Access (OA) business is at the forefront of the industry, driving the transition to open research and ensuring that scientific findings are accessible to all.

About the Role:

As the Senior Project Manager (Open Access), you will play a key role in enabling Springer Nature’s OA transformation, and optimising and expanding our OA business. Reporting to the Director of OA Policy and Strategic Planning, you will lead a dedicated global team of three project specialists focused on implementing new OA initiatives, policies, and business models. In this role you will support projects across the OA team, and have the opportunity to collaborate with stakeholders throughout the wider business.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Project Management and Implementation: Oversee the planning and delivery of new OA business initiatives, policies, and projects. Develop and execute comprehensive project plans that align with the organisation's OA strategy and objectives, ensuring projects are completed on time and meet or exceed quality standards. Example projects might include (but are not limited to) implementing:
    • APC/BPC pricing reviews
    • OA discounting pilots
    • New/revised OA policies, e.g. self-archiving policies
    • Commercial initiatives, e.g. flipping journals from hybrid to fully OA
  • Team Leadership: Manage and mentor a global team of three OA project specialists. Foster a collaborative and high-performing team environment that encourages innovation and excellence in project execution.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with internal stakeholders across departments (e.g. Publishing, Sales, Technology, Legal, Communications, Marketing) to ensure cohesive project implementation and to address any operational challenges.
  • Analysis and Reporting: Monitor and analyse the performance of OA projects. Provide regular reports to senior management on progress, outcomes, and recommendations for further action.
  • Understanding SN processes and structure: Develop a solid understanding of Springer Nature's processes and systems, along with their relationship with and potential impact on projects. Stay informed about and adapt to any organisational or other changes that may impact project delivery.
  • Continuous improvement: Support the wider OA team in identifying and implementing process and governance improvements, optimising efficiency and impact.
  • Project Expertise: Provide OA project and process expertise to support strategy development and decision making.

Experience, Skills and Qualifications:

Essential

  • Proven experience of managing and developing complex and interconnected business projects. Experience of working with a wide range of stakeholders at various levels and on a global scale.
  • Excellent organisation skills to manage multiple concurrent projects and competing priorities.
  • Excellent communication skills; able to communicate with different stakeholders at all levels and on a global scale.
  • Problem solving/logic/analytical skills, with the ability to capture and document requirements and processes.
  • Excel and Powerpoint proficiency.
  • Good numeracy skills and attention to detail.
  • Understanding of publishing workflows and open access business models and policy landscape.
  • Degree or equivalent work experience

Desirable

  • Formal project management qualification such as PRINCE2
