Human Technopole (HT) is an interdisciplinary life science research institute, created and supported by the Italian Government, with the aim of developing innovative strategies to improve human health. HT is composed of five Centers: Computational Biology, Structural Biology, Genomics, Neurogenomics and Health Data Science. The Centers work together to enable interdisciplinary research and to create an open, collaborative environment that will help promote life science research both nationally and internationally.


The Human Technopole Foundation is looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher to work in the Structural Biology Research Centre in the laboratory of Philipp S. Erdmannhttps://humantechnopole.it/en/research-groups/erdmann-group/.

Our research is not just about understanding the structure and function of MLOs in a healthy cell, but we also delve into their role in diseases. We believe that the key to many medical breakthroughs lies in these tiny cellular structures that escape classical structural biology approaches.


We employ various cutting-edge techniques to investigate cellular functions at high resolution. This includes confocal light microscopy, crosslinking mass spec, and expansion microscopy. However, what sets us apart is our core expertise in cryo-focused ion beam (FIB) milling and cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET). These two techniques allow us to investigate cells “in situ”, providing us with an unprecedented view of cellular processes as they happen in their native environment.


Our ultimate goal? To perform a “biopsy at the nanoscale”! With our recently introduced Serialized On-grid Lift-In Sectioning for Tomography (SOLIST) approach we have made a significant step towards this goal. We now aim to observe disease-associated MLOs directly in patient-derived samples. In this project, we will explore the role of stress granules in organoids derived from colorectal cancer patients. Despite their important role in cellular metabolism and implication in a variety of human diseases, the native structure of stress granules has not yet been resolved at high resolution. However, this would allow drawing conclusions as to how their organization and function are linked. Our goal is therefore to resolve the internal structure and the molecular makeup of stress granules in their natural environment using the cutting-edge technologies available at Human Technopole. Combined with information from our colleagues in the other departments (Genomics, Computational Biology) this could revolutionize how we understand and treat diseases!

Your main tasks and responsibilities:

  • Design, perform, and evaluate experiments.
  • Generate data and document the results for later publication.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to (junior) lab members, including teaching of new techniques and providing support in the use of lab equipment.

Job requirements

Essential requirements

  • PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry, or structural biology (obtained at the call closure time or near completion).
  • Hands-on experience in either single particle cryo-EM or cryo-ET.
  • Hands-on experience in processing of cryo-EM data (either SPA or tomo)
  • Hands-on experience in optical microscopy (e.g. confocal)
  • Fluency in English - HT is an international research institute.
  • Autonomy in cell culture of mammalian cells.
  • Experience in standard wet lab techniques such as cloning, protein production (mammalian, bacterial, insect), affinity purification, immunoprecipitation, ELISA, western-blot analysis, etc.
  • Knowledge of biophysical techniques for the study of protein stability (e.g. DLS, ITC, etc.).

Preferential requirements

  • FIB/SEM experience are considered highly beneficial.
  • Data processing, analysis, and visualization for structural biology.
  • Experience in the generation and maintenance of organoids.

Organizational and social skills

  • Ability to adapt to competing priorities and to work independently.
  • Interest to learn or develop new methodologies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Teamwork is key!
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment.
