About CUR8

The science is clear: even if we do everything else right on reducing emissions, the world needs to remove 200 Gigatonnes of carbon from the atmosphere by 2050.

We have decades of experience working with the leading climate change actors, which we combine with deep technical and business expertise to build the carbon removals industry faster than ever before.

We partner with providers of the highest quality carbon removals, and we don’t stop there; developing carbon markets creates an unprecedented opportunity for the creation of innovation, value, equity, and jobs across the world. We believe the supply side of carbon removals is the biggest opportunity for our business and for the world.

We’re systemic thinkers. Together with our sister NGO, Rethinking Removals, we collaborate with the entire carbon removals ecosystem, across suppliers, buyers, policymakers, and narrative setters, together to develop and invest in future projects to make sure there are enough carbon removals in 1, 5, 10 and 25 years time.

About our team

We’re a small but mighty team; between us, we’ve built, scaled, and sold successful tech businesses, advised governments on net zero, shaped global narratives at Nature, New Scientist, and the BBC, led startup support and investments at Google, invested in and built carbon removal startups. Oh, and done the TED talk about carbon removals (have you seen it yet?)

About the role

  • You will be part of our science team, contributing to CUR8’s approach to the science behind carbon removals
  • You will conduct comprehensive assessments of CDR projects and methodologies, across a wide range of nature-based, technological and hybrid solutions; you may also co-author or review others’ assessments
  • You will help identify and assess specific project risks, and support the development of Cur8’s internal risk quantification and mitigation framework
  • You will help support the development of scientific theses per removal type
  • You will identify opportunities to enhance our scientific due diligence process and support its implementation
  • You will act as a point of contact for our current and new carbon removal suppliers, helping guide them through our due diligence process
  • You may act as a UK point of contact with our scientific advisors and external scientific communities
  • You will collaborate with sales, operations, engineering, product and marketing teams to ensure scientific rigour and knowledge of carbon removals underpin success for the entire organisation
  • You will help inform our overall business strategy to achieve maximum commercial and climate outcomes, always balancing what’s good for the company, the ecosystem, and the planet
  • You will contribute to an effective, fun, impact-driven culture, where everyone has an opportunity to lead

About you

  • You are passionate about impact, startups, and climate change and you’re a proactive self-starter
  • Strong scientific research skills, including the ability to help develop and assess scientific theses
  • A PhD, ideally in a relevant geoscience/climate field (e.g. biogeochemistry, oceanography, soil science, earth system modelling, etc.), or an MSc and significant research experience.
  • Familiarity and experience with carbon dioxide removal in general and, ideally, deeper expertise in one or more particular carbon dioxide removal pathways.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to summarise complex scientific concepts in an accessible manner
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment
  • You are a people person - you enjoy working with suppliers and partners, solving problems, and building long-lasting, trusted professional relationships
  • You’re happy to take initiative in an ambitious, fast-paced, and ambiguous environment
  • Familiarity and experience with carbon markets and carbon accounting is a major plus

About the perks

  • Peace for the Planet: Worried about your personal carbon footprint? We’ll make a meaningful contribution to removing it.
  • Satisfaction: With a little bit of luck, we’ll save the planet (pretty good, isn’t it). But seriously. Every time we transact, the world gets a little better.
  • Space (and Snacks) to Think: We share a lovely bright office in Shoreditch/Liverpool Street with abundant free snacks. Most of us are office-based three days a week.
  • Uninterrupted Time Off: We’ll treat you with dignity - we have a hybrid culture that’s inclusive for parents and respectful of boundaries (no 3am emails!)
