Job Details

The Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg is looking to appoint an outstanding individual to a

Tenured Professorship „Molecular Microbiology“ (W2 salary)

within the Faculty of Natural Sciences I — Biosciences, Institute of Biology. The position will commence preferably by the 1st of April 2025.

In alignment with the MLU's long-term vision for knowledge cultures, learning, sustainability, and transformation, the appointed Professor is expected to address key questions in the field of “sustainability” through research that adopts an interdisciplinary approach to study the physiology of environmental adaptation in bacteria or archaea, for example through examining macromolecular control of microbial cellular processes, or signal transduction mechanisms. The professorship will play a central role in advancing collaborative research within the focal areas of the Institute / Faculty (RNA/protein biology; molecular plant research; biodiversity). Ideally, the candidate's past research should have a foundation in at least one of these areas, and we anticipate that the applicant will actively seek to integrate at least two of these focal areas. The candidate's research statement should demonstrate a clear commitment to fostering synergies between these focal areas, to interdisciplinary collaboration, and to contributing to existing or planned collaborative research groups (CRC or RTG).

We are looking for a scientist with an innovative research concept, who thrives as a collaborative team player, reflecting our commitment to cultivating a dynamic and forward-thinking academic environment. Junior Group Leaders at an early stage of their career, who have already demonstrated scientific excellence through a strong publication record and by securing competitive third-party funding, are strongly encouraged to apply.

We value pedagogical skills in the applicants highly and the professorship must represent the complete spectrum of Molecular Microbiology at Bachelor and Master levels, including Secondary School teachers. Applicants are encouraged to submit a teaching statement outlining their pedagogical approaches and specific ideas tailored to the study programs offered.

Further duties and responsibilities are stipulated in section 34 of the Saxony-Anhalt State Law of Universities.

Applicants need to fulfill the pre-conditions of appointment as stipulated in section 35 of the Saxony-Anhalt State Law of Universities. Particular emphasis is placed on a Habilitation in the relevant field, or an equivalent level of scientific achievement and recognition. Candidates are expected to have attained the appropriate level of experience or qualification in teaching.

The Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg is committed to diversity and aims to create an inclusive environment where our staff and students feel valued and inspired. In particular, we aim to increase the proportion of women appointed as permanent staff; therefore, appropriately qualified female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply for this position.

The Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg strives to provide an environment compatible with worklife balance and has been certified as a family-friendly university since 2009.

Applications from candidates with disabilities are particularly welcome and will be given preference in the event of equivalent qualification.

Applications with curriculum vitae, certificates, description of academic career, list of publications, scope of previous third-party funding and proof of previous teaching activities are requested electronically by 11.06.2024 via the appointment portal of Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg:
