Job description

Human Technopole (HT) is a distinguished life science research institute founded and supported by the Italian government. HT is an interdisciplinary hub, fostering collaboration among leading researchers in an open and cooperative environment where researchers are empowered with state-of-the-art tools to effectively and innovatively address and impact complex challenges in human health.  HT is composed of five Centers: Neurogenomics, Computational Biology, Structural Biology, Genomics, and Health Data Science. The Centers work together to enable interdisciplinary research and to create an open, collaborative environment that will help promote life science research both nationally and internationally.


About the lab:

Are you passionate about exploring the mysteries of the cell? The Erdmann group invites you to join our journey into the world of membrane-less organelles (MLOs).

Our research is not just about understanding the structure and function of MLOs in a healthy cell, but we also delve into their role in diseases. We believe that the key to many medical breakthroughs lies in these tiny cellular structures that escape classical structural biology approaches.

We employ various cutting-edge techniques to investigate cellular functions at high resolution. This includes crosslinking mass spec and expansion microscopy. However, what sets us apart is our core expertise in cryo-focused ion beam (FIB) milling and cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET). These techniques allow us to investigate cells “in situ”, providing us with an unprecedented view of cellular processes as they happen in their native environment.

Our ultimate goal? To perform a “biopsy at the nanoscale”! We aim to observe disease-associated MLOs directly in patient-derived samples, for example organoids. This approach could revolutionize how we understand and treat diseases.

Key tasks and responsibilities:

  • Conduct molecular biology, biochemistry, and cell biology experiments.
  • Perform routine cryo-electron microscopy/tomography tasks and experiments.
  • General lab management and organization such as placing orders and maintaining resources of the lab (reagents, tools, etc.).
  • Generate data and document the results for later publication.
  • Provide scientific support and guidance to (junior) lab members, including teaching of new techniques and providing support in the use of lab equipment.

Job requirements

Essential requirements:

On the closing date for online applications, the candidate must fulfil all the following conditions:

  • Master with proven four years of research experience or PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry, or structural biology.
  • Autonomy in cell culture of mammalian cells.
  • Experience in standard wet lab techniques such as cloning, protein production (mammalian, bacterial, insect), affinity purification, immunoprecipitation, ELISA, western-blot analysis, etc.
  • Knowledge of biophysical techniques for the study of proteins (e.g. DLS, ITC, etc.).
  • Hands-on experience in confocal or similar light microscopy techniques.
  • Fluency in English - HT is an international research institute.

Preferred requirements:

  • Cryo-EM/ET and FIB/SEM experience are considered highly beneficial.
  • Experience in the generation and handling of organoids.
  • Data analysis and visualization for structural biology.

Salary: up to 41K depending on the candidate' seniority. Tax benefits where applicable.
