At the University of Duisburg-Essen, in the Faculty of Physics, the following vacancy can be filled at the earliest possible point in time:

University professorship in “Statistical Physics”

(W3 salary band as defined in the North Rhine-Westphalian regulations for the W salary range (Landesbesoldungsordnung W))

We are looking for an internationally recognised scholar to represent the research field of Statistical Physics at the Faculty of Physics and develop it in a modern and pioneering direction. Possible fields of research include physical methods in artificial intelligence, data-based modelling of complex systems, socio-economic systems or quantum thermodynamics. The new research area is to be strengthened in future by the appointment of an additional professor.

The willingness to collaborate with other groups at the Faculty of Physics and at thematically related faculties is a prerequisite. Candidates should initiate coordinated research projects at the University of Duisburg-Essen in future. Connections to existing research collaborations such as the CRC/TRR 270 ‘Hysteresis Design of Magnetic Materials for Efficient Energy Conversion’ or the CRC 1242 ‘Non-Equilibrium Dynamics of Condensed Matter in the Time Domain’ are possible.

We expect the successful candidate to have published papers in leading refereed publication media and to have experience in conducting projects for which they have acquired external funding from competitive schemes themself, preferably projects funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), as appropriate to the advertised position.

The successful candidate should represent the field of physics in research and teaching and participate in the teaching activities of the faculty to the usual extent.

The hiring requirements comply with § 36 of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (HG). This act requires candidates to have a university degree and a particular aptitude for research work, as is generally demonstrated by outstanding results in doctoral studies in a relevant field. The candidate is also expected to have demonstrated further academic achievements as part of a junior professorship, a habilitation or a role as a research fellow at a higher education institution or at a non-university research institution or through research work in industry, administration or another public sector field in Germany or abroad.
