We are a young, innovative university located in the heart of the Ruhr metropolis. We pride ourselves in outstanding research and teaching, think in terms of opportunities rather than limitations and develop ideas with a view to the future. Diversity is an integral part of our culture as we promote potential and are committed to upholding genuine equity in education.

At the University of Duisburg-Essen, in the Faculty of Physics, the following vacancy can be filled at the earliest possible point in time:

University professorship in “Statistical Physics”

(W3 salary band as defined in the North Rhine-Westphalian regulations for the W salary range (Landesbesoldungsordnung W))

We are looking for an internationally recognised scholar to represent the research field of Statistical Physics at the Faculty of Physics and develop it in a modern and pioneering direction. Possible fields of research include physical methods in artificial intelligence, data-based modelling of complex systems, socio-economic systems or quantum thermodynamics. The new research area is to be strengthened in future by the appointment of an additional professor.

The willingness to collaborate with other groups at the Faculty of Physics and at thematically related faculties is a prerequisite. Candidates should initiate coordinated research projects at the University of Duisburg-Essen in future. Connections to existing research collaborations such as the CRC/TRR 270 ‘Hysteresis Design of Magnetic Materials for Efficient Energy Conversion’ or the CRC 1242 ‘Non-Equilibrium Dynamics of Condensed Matter in the Time Domain’ are possible.

We expect the successful candidate to have published papers in leading refereed publication media and to have experience in conducting projects for which they have acquired external funding from competitive schemes themself, preferably projects funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), as appropriate to the advertised position.

The successful candidate should represent the field of physics in research and teaching and participate in the teaching activities of the faculty to the usual extent.

The University of Duisburg-Essen places great emphasis on excellence in teaching and graduate education. Candidates should present their teaching concepts, illustrating their commitment to educating the next generation of scientists, and show their relevance to the teaching and learning profile of the University of Duisburg-Essen.

The hiring requirements comply with § 36 of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (HG). This act requires candidates to have a university degree and a particular aptitude for research work, as is generally demonstrated by outstanding results in doctoral studies in a relevant field. The candidate is also expected to have demonstrated further academic achievements as part of a junior professorship, a habilitation or a role as a research fellow at a higher education institution or at a non-university research institution or through research work in industry, administration or another public sector field in Germany or abroad.

The University of Duisburg-Essen promotes the diversity of its members (https://www.uni-due.de/diversity/en/). It strives to increase the percentage of women in its academic staff and therefore emphatically invites qualified women to apply. The faculty’s Equal Opportunities Officer, Dr. Cornelia Geller, is available as contact person and can be reached by email at gleichstellungsbeauftragte.physik@uni-due.de. In the case of equal qualifications, female candidates will be considered with preference (Equal Opportunities Act). As per § 2 Sect. 3 SGB IX, applications by candidates with a disability or equivalent status are especially welcome.

Complete applications should contain a CV, list of publications, documentation of academic and professional development, copies of relevant documents and certificates, an exposé of the applicant’s research profile with explicit description of how it complements and extends research directions within the University, a list of successful external grant applications, a list of courses taught and a teaching philosophy, an enumeration of experience in academic self-administration, and a completed application form. Please submit your application to the address below by June 3rd 2024.

Prodekan der Fakultät für Physik der Universität Duisburg-Essen, Herrn Univ.-Prof. Dr. Michael Horn-von Hoegen, Forsthausweg 2, 47057 Duisburg, Germany, dekanat.physik@uni-due.de.

The application form and further information on the position, its affiliations within the University of Duisburg-Essen and the Faculty of Physics can be found at https://www.uni-due.de/physik/dekanat/stellenausschreibungen_en.php.
