We are looking for two highly motivated and creative PhD students to develop novel drug delivery systems, designed to engineer membrane receptors for therapeutic purposes. The PhD positions are funded by the ERC Starting Grant 2023 “DRESSCODE” for a duration of 4 years. The positions will be starting in January 2024 (possibility to discuss).
THE RESEARCH – There are 2 research projects available, focusing on:
- Pro-angiogenic therapies for tissue regeneration: The goal of this project is to study and engineer the Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Receptor among other pro-angiogenic receptors to enhance angiogenesis and improve wound healing, primarily for diabetic ulcers. Immunotherapies for cancer: The goal of this project is to deliver the chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) on T cells using protein engineering rather than genetic engineering, and to compare the two strategies for cancer immunotherapies in blood cancer and solid tumors.
The main techniques involved in these projects include cloning, protein production, cell culture, in vitro molecular and cellular assays, flow cytometry, microscopy and in vivo experimentations. We will be happy to train our new member to ensure high-quality scientific research.
THE PI & THE LAB – Prof. Priscilla Briquez is an expert in protein engineering, drug delivery and biomaterials. She conducts applied research with passion and ambition to develop new therapies for tissue regeneration and cancer immunotherapies, as showcased by cutting-edge contributions in her field. She did her Master degree and PhD at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL, Switzerland) and her post-doctoral research at the University of Chicago (IL, USA). She is now developing her laboratory as a young, dynamic, multi-cultural and collaborative group, which started in May 2021. It is located in the modern and excellent scientific environment of the Medical Center – University of Freiburg, close to the Biology Faculty, the Engineering Faculty and the Max Planck Institute. Freiburg is ideally placed at the center of the European University Campus, close to Basel (Switzerland) and Strasbourg (France).
YOUR PROFILE – Our group is looking for 2 new PhD members with high motivation and curiosity for Science & Engineering, and who are willing to perform their own research while collaborating with the other members of our group. The ideal candidate should have/be:
- A Master degree in Biology, Bioengineering, Biochemistry, Material sciences or similar Willing to perform animal experimentation in accordance with the ethical regulations Good communication skills & team working spirit Creative innovative thinking English language is required
