The Southern Medical Program (SMP) within the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for a full-time position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Teaching (tenure-track). This position will be located at the UBC Okanagan campus and involves interaction with faculty and trainees at all of the Faculty of Medicine regional sites. This position may require you to enter a healthcare facility. The Southern Medical Program (SMP) is one of four distributed undergraduate medical education programs within The University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Faculty of Medicine (FoM). This innovative, distributed program is an expansion of the UBC medical program to University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC), University of Victoria (UVic) and both UBC Vancouver and Okanagan campuses. Students are admitted to each of the four programs every year: the Island Medical Program (IMP) at UVic, the Northern Medical Program (NMP) at UNBC, and at UBC, the Vancouver Fraser Medical Program (VFMP) and the Southern Medical Program (SMP) at the UBC Okanagan campus. The SMP delivers its education and training though partnership with Interior Health (IH) and activity occurs in regional and community hospitals, community health centres, and family physician offices in 30 different communities through the Interior. Within the IH region, there are over 1,600 health professionals engaged with teaching UBC medical students and residents. The Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Management (CCDPM) is the research centre based within the SMP at UBC Okanagan.
Reporting to the Regional Associate Dean, Interior and a Department Head (of a relevant academic department identified after candidate selection) , the successful candidate will be expected to participate in the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities in the Southern Medical Program, the provincial MD Undergraduate Program, and the UBC Department. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with other distributed sites, and departments. They will be highly engaged in educational leadership activities including curriculum development and innovation, and other scholarly activities that advance distributed medical education. The candidate must be able to participate in developing and supporting student research projects. The successful candidate will also participate in relevant service activities within the University and provide service to the University and the broader academic and professional community.
The successful candidate will hold a MD or PhD in health and science related discipline. Additional postgraduate degree in education or health professions education is preferred. The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence in teaching, and promise of educational leadership. Preference will be given to candidates with previous teaching experience in medical education and an interest in distributed medical education. Candidates are expected to have excellent communication skills and working knowledge of modern teaching methods and supporting tools.
