The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena (Germany) is seeking for the summer semester 2024 a
W3- or W2-Professor with tenure track to W3 for
Theoretical Solid-State Physics
We are looking for a research personality (m/f/d) with broad expertise and a high level of didactic competence, who represents the subject area across the full breadth of research and teaching. An excellent research profile in modern methods of theoretical solid-state physics is expected, as e.g. computational ab-initio or many-body methods, and their application to novel materials and structures, such as quantum materials, topological or 2D materials, quantum dots or wires, surfaces, interfaces, thin films, quantum systems and/or nanostructures based on inorganic semiconductors or dielectrics.
A close collaboration with existing groups at the department working in the areas of solid-state physics, material sciences, quantum information and/or theoretical physics is expected. The existing research areas at the department should be strengthened by the expertise of the candidate, especially to initiate coordinated research projects. Further links to the strong research areas in optics/photonics and theoretical physics of the department are welcome. Experience in the acquisition of third-party funding and in the implementation of third-party funded projects as well as leadership skills are expected.
We are looking for a person who will contribute to the Bachelor‘s, Master‘s, and teacher’s training programs of the department and who will be committed to modernizing the teaching program. Teaching competence in the area of theoretical physics, computational physics and in in particular in advanced solid-state theory are expected. Duties include participation in academic self-administration.
The prerequisites are a completed degree, a relevant doctorate, a Habilitation or equivalent academic achievements, as well as pedagogical aptitude. In the case of a first-time appointment to a professorship, the professorship shall initially be filled as a W2 professorship for a fixed term of six years. After a maximum of six years and subject to a positive tenure evaluation, appointment to a W3 professorship shall take place without the vacancy being readvertised. Appointment as a W3-professor shall be for life as a civil servant, provided that the legal requirements are met.
