The Institute for Biomagnetism and Biosignal Analysis (IBB) of the UKM is looking for a PhD student to join the Junior Research Group Body, Brain, and Behaviour in May/June 2023.
Our work is centred on the question to what extent physiological processes like respiration, cardiac signals, or pupil dilation modulate neural activity in human cognition and perception. Methodologically, we employ different electrophysiological approaches for measuring brain activity (MEG, EEG), brain stimulation (TMS), and behavioural experiments.

The PhD project “A translational perspective on body-brain coupling and human perception” investigates the coupling of physiological rhythms and brain activity in a neuropsychiatric context. Of particular interest are respiration-related modulations of cortical excitability in epilepsy patients as well as the neural correlates of interoceptive processing in patients with panic disorder.

The advertised position is part-time (65%, salary according to TV-L E13) and funded by the programme “Innovative Medizinische Forschung“ of the UKM. The initial funding period of three years may be extended.

The ideal candidate…

• has a background in psychology, neuroscience, medicine, biology/life sciences or a comparable field (M.Sc. or equivalent degree)
• is empathic and reliable in their interactions with neurological and psychiatric patients
• has a highly structured, independent work ethic
• is motivated and interested in developing novel analytical and experimental methods
• has fundamental or advanced knowledge of statistical data analysis
• is comfortable and fluent in speaking/writing in English
   

Prior experience with programming (Matlab, R, Python) and/or recordings of physiological data (EEG/MEG, ECG) is beneficial, but not required.
