Scientist in Paleo-Oceanography (m/f/d)in the frame of the ERC Synergy-Grant "T-SECTOR"

Project Description

For the understanding of the Earth system a quantification of climate-solid Earth feedbacks is required. The global glacial/interglacial climatic changes of the past 1,5 million years led to the periodic waxing and waning of continental ice sheets and caused a vast mass transfer between the continents (ice load) and the oceans resulting in sea level changes of up to 140 m. Mid ocean ridges where 80% of Earth’s volcanism occurs, are sensitive to such pressure changes, but their response to glacial cycles is largely unknown. Models of MOR response to sea level fluctuations predict changes in crustal thickness, chemistry of lavas and hydrothermal activity but comprehensive time series of these MOR parameters have so far not been accessible.

Recent studies have shown, however, that MOR eruptions deposit samples of lava as glass particles on nearby sediments. These carbonate-rich sediments provide an archive of ridge eruptions (glasses) and hydrothermal activity (trace metals) that can be sampled by gravity coring. Through closely spaced new cores, high-resolution time series of volcanism and hydrothermal activity can be achieved and directly linked to the climate record. We plan to obtain such records from slow, intermediate and fast spreading ridge segments over the past 1.5 Ma.

Job Description / Duties

The successful candidate will be part of the international team of researchers of the ERC Synergy Grant „T-SECTOR“. She:he will lead the recovery of sediment cores during the planned seagoing expeditions and their correlation and chronostratigraphic evaluation. She:he will be responsible for the interpretation of data obtained from application of various core logging methods as well as the production of high resolution oxygen isotope stratigraphies of selected reference cores. In addition, she:he will play a key role in the planning of and preparations for the expeditions. Further tasks include the scientific interpretation of the data, their presentation at national and international conferences as well as their publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The successful candidate will regularly communicate with the other team members and will contribute to the management of the project.

Qualification

  • A PhD in geology or closely related field is required.
  • An internationally competitive research profile in paleo-oceanography based on expertise in one or more specific subject areas proven through publications in peer reviewed scientific journals is necessary.
  • Experience in the determination of oxygen and carbon isotope compositions of biogenic carbonates using IRMS and their stratigraphic application is required.
  • Comprehensive practical experience in using geological devices for sediment coring and sea floor sampling.
  • We expect establishment and self-responsible leadership of a working group.
  • Proven success in acquiring third party funding for research projects.
  • We expect experience and willingness to participate in sea-going expeditions.
  • We expect excellent English language skills.
  • Experience in the determinantion of trace element contents of biogenic carbonates using ICP-OES is desirable.
  • International academic networking is desirable.

This is a full-time permanent position according to 100% of a full-time equivalent. The position cannot be split. Flexible work time models are possible.

The salary depends on qualification and can be up to the class 14 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees.
