Job Details

Nature Research is a flagship portfolio of journals, products and services including Nature and the Nature-branded journals, dedicated to serving the scientific community.

This is an exciting opportunity to join Nature, the world’s leading science journal, as part of our team producing outstanding expert-authored opinion content on digital platforms and in print.

As part of the journal's Opinion team, you will source, commission, and edit authoritative, analytical, thought-leading comment and opinion pieces for an international audience of researchers and science stakeholders, across all disciplines and to tight deadlines. You will stay on top of emerging research directions, science policy, current affairs and wider cultural developments, and have a good sense of the concerns and interests of our core contributors and audience: working researchers. You will have excellent interpersonal skills as part of a high-performing global team, and be passionate about the craft of communication, from the importance of headlines to the impact of compelling images, graphics and multimedia content.

Responsibilities:

  • Commission and edit expert Opinion content for Nature in digital and print media, including Comment and Worldview pieces and cultural reviews
  • Maintain broad knowledge of big issues in science, science policy, the scientific community, world current affairs and cultural trends.
  • Work closely and diplomatically with external thought-leaders, and research and news editors across Nature and other Springer Nature journals and books, to ensure the journal's Opinion sections are original, authoritative, accessible and impactful.
  • Ensure Opinion content reflects and furthers Nature’s strategic goals, including Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
  • Write compelling headlines, standfirsts, captions and other accompanying text to ensure articles have maximum reach and impact.
  • Work with art and multimedia teams on images, graphics, audio and video that add depth and value.
  • Work with sub-editing, art and production teams to ensure timely delivery of content.

Experience, skills and qualifications:

Essential

  • A degree in a relevant subject, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Significant experience in science editing, and enthusiasm for, and basic fluency in, an array of science topics.
  • Fast and accurate writing and editing skills, showing an ability to synthesize complex ideas and topics.
  • Good understanding of the interests and concerns of Nature’s core audience of working research scientists.
  • Excellent interpersonal and time-management skills, and an ability to work easily with authors and colleagues to hit tight deadlines.
  • Command of journalistic values and best practice, including libel law and defamation.

Desirable

  • Understanding of science policy.
  • Comfort with newsroom tools and their use to enhance content.
  • Experience with social media platforms to promote and enhance content.
  • Understanding of trends in digital publishing.
