Position Summary:

The Plemel and Mahal Labs at the University of Alberta are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Postdoctoral Fellow to work on a research project aimed at studying glycosylation and brain glial cells and their contribution to Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The successful candidate will develop a toolset to examine glycosylation in conjunction with single-cell transcriptomics in the brain. The candidate will work in an interdisciplinary research team focussing on glycomics and MS to understand how the brain can be primed by viruses to cause MS. Dr. Plemel is a Canada Research Chair whose group studies how brain macrophages, called microglia, can promote regeneration and damage under different conditions. Dr. Mahal is a Canada Excellence Research Chair in Glycomics whose group is on the leading edge of creating and utilizing systems-based approaches to decode the glycome.

Responsibilities:

-plan, direct, and conduct specialized research experiments to understand glycosylation in the context of glia in the brain and within MS tissue and animal models.

-Develop and optimize new single-cell transcriptomics and glycomic tools to examine glycosylation in the brain.

-Collaborate with other members of the Plemel and Mahal labs to achieve research goals.

-Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

-Present research findings at national and international conferences.

Qualifications:

Strong written and verbal skills in English are essential, as is the ability to work well in a team environment. We are looking for someone that is curious, perseverant, organized, and flexible, with the capacity to learn new approaches and analyze multidimensional data. Ph.D. in Cell Biology, Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Immunology, or Chemistry.
