Postdoctoral fellow in tumor biology

Ref PAR 2023/464

The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

Institute of Biomedicine conducts research and teaching in preclinical and clinical medical sciences. The department is divided into four sections: infectious diseases, microbiology and immunology, laboratory medicine, and medical biochemistry and cell biology. The candidate will work at the Sahlgrenska Center for Cancer Research, a center within the University of Gothenburg in close association with Sahlgrenska University Hospital. The center is part of a strategic research effort within the Sahlgrenska Academy focused on cancer research and consists of a mixture of basic and clinical research projects with translational ambitions.

Subject area

Tumor biology

Subject area description

This open postdoc position is contained within Professor Anders Ståhlberg’s research group at Sahlgrenska Center Research for Cancer. We are looking for an enthusiastic person, who will lead and develop an innovative research project around tumor microenvironment, working in an interdisciplinary research team. The research group’s long-term goal is to define molecular mechanisms in tumor development and to develop new interventions for patients suffering from cancer, including melanoma, breast cancer and sarcoma. This project includes basic tumor biology research related to the tumor microenvironment. We will characterize both the cellular and the non-cellular microenvironment, including circulating factors, such as extracellular vesicles. An important research question is to determine why specific tumor cells only form metastases in specific target tissues. The project goal is to develop and apply a platform for spatial transcriptome analyses with single-cell resolution to study molecular mechanisms in the tumor microenvironment. We will also use unique methods to create patient-specific microenvironments, for example via 3D printing. Our work is in close collaboration with other partners within academy, health care and industry. Suitable background for a candidate is a PhD exam related to molecular biology and/or tumor biology. Experience in molecular methods, such as cell culturing, protein analysis, PCR, sequencing and bioinformatics is considered a merit. We are looking for a candidate that wants to develop a new research field. The candidate will have large freedom to develop an independent research profile. Additional information about the research group: https://www.gu.se/en/research/anders-stahlberg

Duties

Within this project you will plan, design and perform research activities with the aim to identify key molecular processes in the tumor microenvironment. You will be working with molecular techniques as well as cellular methods, 3D-approaches and clinical samples. The project will focus on spatial transcriptomics analysis, but other techniques related to protein, RNA and DNA analyses are important. The aim of the project is to develop a new research field around the tumor microenvironment. Hence, a strong focus is to develop innovative methods and handling experimental data. The work also includes project management, supervision, scientific reporting and communication of research data in oral presentations. Interactions with other academic and industrial collaborators as well as networks are also part of the job assignments.
