The Leibniz Institute for Resilience Research (LIR) in Mainz, Germany, is an independent research institution that conducts translational research on resilience, defined as the maintenance of mental health despite stress or critical life events. This research aims at translating knowledge from basic research into clinically relevant knowledge and intervention development in close collaboration with experimentalists. This approach requires the integration and analysis of large and heterogeneous data sets from different basic and applied research areas, including molecular, physiological, neuroimaging and behavioural data from animal models and/or longitudinal cohorts in humans.

To complement this research, we are looking for an

Independent Research Group Leader “Computational Resilience Research”

(W1 Professor) (m/f/d) (100% position, currently 38,5 hours/week)

The independent Research group leader position will be available from autumn 2023 and is funded for six years (four plus two years with evaluation). The possibility of extension at the LIR is given (but without the prospect of tenure track).  It comes with an attractive package for personnel and consumables. The research group leader will be granted membership rights of the University Mainz / University Medical Centre Mainz and will be entitled to use the title “Junior Professor” (equivalent to the level of assistant professor) for the duration of the employment relationship if the relevant recruitment requirements of the Section 54 of the Hochschulgesetz of Rhineland-Palatinate are met, i.e., scientific experience generally within six years after PhD and teaching experience.

The temporary employment is based on the regulations of the Law on Temporary Employment Contracts in Science (WissZeitVG). Payment is based on EG 14 TV-UM (collective agreement of the University Medical Center Mainz).

Your tasks include:

We are offering an Independent Research Group Leader Position (m/f/d) on computational resilience research in collaboration with the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy of the LMU Munich, and closely connected with the EMTHERA excellence initiative of the Rhine-Main-Universities (www.emthera.de) with its focus on immunology and immunotherapy. The Independent Research Group will develop its own research agenda and ideally complement, shape and develop ongoing research lines at the and already initiated computational frameworks, e.g., IsyN (www.isyn-mainz.de), IMBEI (www.unimedizin-mainz.de/imbei) and IQCB (https://press.uni-mainz.de/johannes-gutenberg-university-mainz-obtains-approval-for-humboldt-professorship-in-biology/) and is expected to integrate into research initiatives at the Johannes Gutenberg University and the University Medical Centre Mainz such as the Focus program Translational Neurosciences (FTN) and the ReALity initiative.

Your profile:

We are seeking a highly motivated scientist with an excellent postdoctoral track record documented by high-profile first author publications. Successful supervision of students or evidence of involvement in teaching is expected.

The applicant should demonstrate qualifications and a strong and broad background in developing and applying computational techniques for understanding and integrating multidimensional and dynamic biomedical, neuroscientific, or behavioural data sets. This encompasses statistical learning and multidimensional data analysis techniques and Interest in methodological work to design and engineer novel, non-standard analysis tools and pipelines tailored to specific biomedical questions.

Since the position involves interdisciplinary collaboration with academic and industrial partners, a solid understanding of both biology, biomedicine, or neuroscience, as well as strong communication and networking skills are required.
