The Department of Infectious Disease at Imperial College London is seeking two outstanding academics for the post of i) Lecturer in Synthetic Biology, and ii) Senior Lecturer or Reader in Structural Biology. Infectious Disease is one of eight departments within the Faculty of Medicine. 

The Department provides a world-class research environment where scientists from clinical and non-clinical backgrounds work together to address the unmet clinical needs for infectious disease control on a global scale. Many members of the department are associates of the newly formed Institute of Infection which provides a forum for cross Faculty and multidisciplinary approaches to combatting infectious Disease.

The Department has six sections, including the Section of Structural & Synthetic Biology which will host the new appointments. The Section works on fundamental biological mechanisms underlying human diseases as well as applying new synthetic biology technologies to both discovery and applications in human diseases.

As part of its strategic planning, the Department aims to expand our structural and synthetic biology research. The post of Lecturer will be appointed within the field of synthetic biology, and we encourage applications from those applying bioengineered tools to understand human disease in relevant model systems or clinical application. The post of Senior Lecturer or Reader will be appointed in structural biology and we encourage applications from individuals using cryo-electron tomography as their core method or undertaking EM-related methods development.

Duties and Responsibilities

You will be expected to bring or develop a research programme applying a structural or synthetic biology approach. You will have a track record of publications in structural or synthetic biology and of obtaining funding in this area. You will be expected to work collaboratively across the Section, the Department, and the wider Faculty of Medicine and other Faculties of Imperial College. Relevant areas of research include, but are not limited to bacteriology, mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), host microbe interactions, or virology. Other fields relating to human disease will also be considered.

You will also be involved in teaching responsibilities. The Department hosts two Masters of Science courses, in Molecular Medicine and in Molecular Biology and Pathogenesis of Viruses; runs 2 streams of the MRes in Biomedical Research (Molecular basis of human disease and Bacterial pathogenesis and infection), and also contributes to undergraduate courses in Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. You will be expected to contribute teaching sessions to some of these courses and to host project students in your laboratory.

Essential Requirements

Commensurate with the level of the appointment, you should have, or be developing, a national and an international reputation in structural/synthetic biology.

It is essential that you hold a PhD or equivalent in structural/synthetic biology or appropriate related field.

You will have a publication record that demonstrates significant contributions to your field, and the ability to independently publish high quality research in peer reviewed journals.
