Applications are invited from outstanding scientific leaders with an innovative research program within the fields of innate immunity and the response to infection and chronic disease. This role will be responsible for leading a large team of scientists as Head of the Centre for Innate Immunity and Infectious Diseases, one of the key Centres within the Hudson Institute of Medical Research.

About the role

Hudson Institute’s Centre for Innate Immunity and Infectious Diseases aims to understand the role of the innate immune response and inflammation in infection and chronic and autoinflammatory diseases and, with this knowledge, advance the development of new therapeutics and disease interventions into clinical application.

The role of Head of the Centre for Innate Immunity and Infectious Diseases is integral to the leadership of Hudson Institute, providing visionary and strategic direction to the Centre and holding a key advisory role to the Director of the Institute.

The Centre Head will be responsible for providing inspirational leadership and excellence in research, and will provide strong advocacy for the Centre and drive translation of the Centre’s research discoveries through strategic partnerships into clinical and commercial outcomes.

The Centre Head will be an outstanding role model, providing strong mentorship to staff and students, and encouraging collaboration across the Centre, Institute and more broadly. The Centre Head will promote a positive, inclusive and respectful culture.

The Centre Head will oversee and manage the Centre’s major research operations which align with the Institute’s strategic plan.

The position will be a fixed-term, full-time appointment at Professorial level (Level E) with an attractive start up package for five years. Relocation and visa costs, if applicable, will be considered for the successful candidate and their families.

About the Centre for Innate Immunity and Infectious Diseases at Hudson Institute

The Centre for Innate Immunity and Infectious Diseases hosts the largest group of inflammation and innate immune system researchers in Australia, who focus on the role of inflammation across a broad range of disease areas including infection, chronic inflammatory diseases, and cancer.

The Centre attracts significant grant and commercial funding and publishes in prestigious journals such as Nature, Science, Nature Immunology, Nature Medicine and Nature Microbiology.

The Centre is home to 12 research groups with collective, cutting edge and multidisciplinary expertise in molecular biology, innate signaling pathways, protein interactions, protein chemistry, cell biology, immunology, bacteriology, functional genomics, bioinformatics, transgenic and gene knockout preclinical models of human disease, as well as clinical research. Centre scientists are involved in active collaborations with leading national and international immunity and infectious disease biologists all over the world.

About You

You will be a highly qualified, experienced and motivated individual, with an excellent track record of high-quality research and publications in leading international journals, and the ability to attract competitive research funding from varied sources including industry and philanthropy.

You will also have:

• A MD and/or PhD with proven accomplishments and demonstrated ability to develop a biomedical and/or clinical research program in inflammation and innate immunity with a focus on translation.
• Recognition at an international level in your discipline. Demonstrated success in winning national and international competitive grants
• Demonstrated ability to build internal and external relationships and establishing collaborative research with relevant partners
• Ability to provide entrepreneurial strategic leadership in commercialisation and translational research and industry partnerships.
• High level of interpersonal, communication and team facilitation skills. An outstanding environment
