The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and analytical sciences.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Adaptation and integration of a Very High Cycle Fatigue (VHCF) system into an existing computed tomography (CT) system; Optimization of the set-up for in-situ CT experiments
  • Computed tomographic in-situ and ex-situ measurements and analyses of the VHCF samples produced in the project
  • Quantitative image analysis of CT, Digital Radiography (DR), Optical and Scanning Electron microscopy (OM and SEM), Focused Ion Beam (FIB) data using conventional software packages as well as self-developed analysis routines
  • Proactive collaboration with both the project partner and internal BAM divisions; coordination of the project activities
  • Active participation in BAM's Materials and Analytical Science Focus Area
  • Detailed scientific documentation of the results by technical articles and presentations at national and international conferences, publications, reports
  • Supervision of interns, bachelor and master students as well as PhD students

Your qualifications:

  • Completed scientific university studies (diploma/master's degree) in engineering, physics, materials science or comparable
  • A doctorate in one of the above-mentioned disciplines is an advantage
  • Good knowledge and experience in computed tomography and imaging
  • Experience and knowledge in digital image processing and quantitative analysis
  • Experience in the design and implementation of experimental set-up and instrumentation
  • Knowledge and experience with fatigue experiments (LCF/HCF/VHCF) are desirable
  • Extensive experience in metallography (OM/REM/FIB) is an advantage
  • Command of one or more task-relevant programming languages (e.g. Python, Matlab, Labview, C++) is desirable
  • Communication skills, both verbal (e.g. proven by appearances at international conferences) and written (ability to publish scientific articles and reports)
  • Good communication and information skills, goal-oriented and structured way of working, initiative/commitment and ability to make decisions, as well as ability to work in a team and willingness to cooperate
