This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Geologist and/or Acoustician to apply their scientific and data programming/analysis expertise across a range of marine environmental data to support the development of world leading products and services for the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO).

About the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO)

We are a world-leading centre for hydrography, specialising in marine geospatial data to support safe, secure and thriving oceans. We fulfil the UK government’s Safety of Life at Sea obligations and are relied upon by defence users, government and global shipping.

The role

Our customers require professional advice and a range of situational awareness products providing information about the marine environment to assist in their planning. To support this, the Ocean Environment Team, within the Scientific Analysis Group, acquires data from a variety of sources and analyses those data for subsequent use.

As an Ocean Environmental Scientist, you will advise on the use and development of environmental data (e.g. marine biological, oceanographic, geological, acoustic and ocean climatological) to provide an assessment of the environmental conditions likely to be encountered. This will be achieved through developing a good understanding of customer needs, undertaking analysis of spatial data, producing technical reports, and collaborating with external organisations and scientific communities both in the UK and overseas.

We are looking for a well-connected and enthusiastic Geologist and/or Acoustician who can apply scientific concepts and advances to meet real world customer needs. The ability to apply skills in data programming/data analysis to meet the evolving needs of our customers is key to success in the role, as is a genuine desire to work collaboratively as part of a small, dynamic team. Ideal attributes include the ability to problem solve and work independently with a positive can-do attitude.

In return

UKHO is a great place in which to explore your career potential. While our projects are career-defining, the work/life balance that we can offer you is equally exceptional. From flexitime, flexible working, an award-winning office environment and a generous annual leave allowance of 34.5 days including public holidays, the opportunities open to you here are hard to beat.

The role will be contractually based at our office in Taunton. We have embraced hybrid working, recognising it is about what you bring to the role and deliver, not where you work from.

Based on the individual needs of your role, you may need to be in the office. Please discuss in more detail with the hiring manager to understand the needs of this role.

Closing dates: 11:55 pm on Sunday 16th April 2023.
