Professorship for Biopolymers
At the Faculty of Chemistry and Earth Sciences of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, a newly established
Professorship for Biopolymers will be filled for the first time in a joint appointment procedure with INNOVENT e.V. Technologieentwicklung Jena (“INNOVENT”), based on the Thuringian model. Linked to the professorship at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena is the direction of a working group for biopolymers in the department for biomaterials at INNOVENT. Employment takes place at INNOVENT, in analogy to the W2 payment scale. Place of work is Jena. The appointment to the Friedrich Schiller University takes place at the full membership level (according to § 85 Abs. 7 ThürHG), with 2 LVS teaching obligation.
We are looking for a personality (m/f/d) with proven experience in the synthesis, modification, characterization and application of bio-based, bio-modified or bio-inspired and stimulus-responsive polymers. In addition to polysaccharides (cellulose, dextran, heparin, etc.) or lignin, synthetically produced poly(amino acid)s and sugar derivatives as well as other bio-based polymers may be focused on. Beyond their basic scientific investigation, upscaling, application-specific processing and application tests are important topics (i.a. in the areas of surface functionalization, pharmaceutical polymers, nanoparticles, or polymers for batteries). In addition to basic research findings, application-oriented research aspects should be especially emphasized.
Candidates (m/f/d) are expected to present very good publications and/or patents, evidence of successful third-party funding acquisition, and leadership skills. Active participation in the Jena Center for Soft Matter (JCSM) and the Center for Energy and Environmental Chemistry Jena (CEEC Jena) is desired, as is participation in coordinated joint projects (such as CRC1278 “PolyTarget”). Required for employment is the special ability for advanced research, as proven by doctorate and habilitation or comparable scientific achievements, as well as pedagogical aptitude.
Jena offers a highly attractive research environment with an integrative network of physical and life science research groups that is characterized by close cooperation between the university, external research institutes, and local companies. It is expected that the new professorship will actively contribute to shaping the campus profile and will extend and intensify collaboration. INNOVENT is a non-profit, industrial research facility at Jena with core competencies in smart surfaces, galvanic applications, magneto-optics, and biomaterials.
Friedrich Schiller University and INNOVENT aim at increasing participation of women in science and teaching and therefore specifically encourage qualified female researchers to apply. Equally qualified applicants with disabilities will be given preference.
For further information on the procedure please contact the dean of the Faculty of Chemistry and Earth Sciences, Prof. Dr. Hans-Dieter Arndt (dekanatchemgeo@uni-jena.de). For further information on INNOVENT please contact its managing director, Dr. Bernd Grünler (bg@innovent-jena.de).
Applications in German or English language with the necessary materials (letter of motivation, curriculum vitae, copies of academic certificates, documentation of teaching experience including evaluation reports, full publication list, five copies of representative research papers, list of research funding, research plan) are to be submitted electronically via the appointment portal of the University of Jena at
