About the State Key Laboratory of Microbial Technology:

Established in 1995, the State Key Laboratory of Microbial Technology of Shandong University has been committing itself to science and technology innovation. It has achieved remarkable results in fields such as the utilization of lignocellulose and bioenergy refinement, the development and utilization of medicinal microbial resources, the exploration of marine microbial resources, and the bio-preparation of bulk chemicals. The laboratory has developed a series of internationally advanced microbial technologies, including large segment genome editing, cell factory technology, cellulose ethanol refining technology, and erythromycin biosynthesis technology. Located in the picturesque Qingdao campus of Shandong University, the laboratory covers an area of 24,000 square meters and has established a pilot platform in collaboration with the local government with a total investment of 500 million yuan. It boasts 7,650 pieces of equipment worth nearly 300 million yuan, including 70 large-scale instruments valued at over 500,000 yuan each. With six sub-platforms covering physical and chemical separation analysis, protein science, substance structure identification, bioengineering, microscopic imaging, and germplasm resources, the laboratory's comprehensive research conditions have reached the domestic first-class level. The laboratory attaches great importance to talent cultivation and has created a favorable environment for talent development. It currently has 159 faculty and staff members, including 81 professors and research fellows. Among them has one member of the German National Academy of Engineering, two members of the European Academy of Sciences, nine national-level leading talents such as National Distinguished Youth, and eleven national-level young talents such as National Excellent Youth. In the Global Ranking of Academic Subject(GRAS), Shandong University's Bioengineering discipline has risen to the 14th  place, and its affiliated journal“Engineering Microbiology” is indexed by Scopus database with a real-time impact factor exceeding 5. Many original technologies developed by the laboratory, such as gene editing, biomass utilization, synthetic biology, natural drug discovery and synthesis, marine microbial resource utilization, and pollutant metabolism transformation, are at the forefront or leading position internationally, some research results have made significant international impacts.
