The Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University is a large-scale tertiary grade-A general hospital integrating medical treatment, teaching and scientific research, one of the key units of the “Summit Plan” for the construction of high-level hospitals in Guangdong Province. The hospital is located in Zhuhai, the important node city in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the happiest city in China. The hospital covers an area of 470,000 square meters, of which the hospital headquarters is 220,000 square meters; the building area is 414,500 square meters, with 4,000 planned beds and 2,000 open beds. 

The predecessor of the hospital was the Zhuhai Medical Center founded in 1992, and officially affiliated to Sun Yat-sen University in 2001. It is the only affiliated hospital of Sun Yat-sen University on the west bank of the Pearl River Estuary. The medical department of Sun Yat-sen University is well-known both at home and abroad, and its affiliated hospitals are well-known all over the world. Relying on the strong support of Zhuhai Municipal Government and Sun Yat-sen University, the hospital gives full play to the advantages of Sun Yat-sen University’s medical talents, disciplines, management and technical resources, and basically forms a disciplinary pattern with complete categories, strong technical force, outstanding specialties, and strong multi-disciplinary comprehensive advantages. Sun Yat-sen University, founded by Dr. Sun Yat-sen and with an educational tradition spanning over 100 years, is a preeminent research, academic and cultural center and the premier location for talent development in South China. Under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, and strongly supported by both the Ministry and Guangdong Province, Sun Yat-sen University has developed into a modern comprehensive university that enjoys a reputation as a top-tier university nationally and a renowned university internationally. 

As a gathering place for high-level talents on the west coast of the Greater Bay Area, the hospital has a group of high-level talents. In recent years, the hospital has introduced 122 high-level talents from home and abroad, 8 high-level health teams in Zhuhai, and successively appointed 5 academicians including Liu Liang, Fu Xiaobing, and Zhan Qimin as Honorary Professors of our hospital.

The hospital currently has 52 integrated clinical specialties (sub-specialties), 6 provincial key clinical specialties, among which the medical imaging department and infectious disease department are selected as provincial high-level clinical key specialties, 31 Zhuhai key clinical specialties, and 5 disciplines are selected as Zhuhai key clinical specialties. During the city’s “14th Five-Year Plan” period, it is a national and provincial key clinical specialty cultivation and construction unit. The hospital is the only hospital in Zhuhai that has the qualification for organ transplantation, and it is also one of the four hospitals in Guangdong Province that has the qualification for liver, kidney and lung organ transplantation.

Teaching and Continuing Education Platform

The hospital is a clinical teaching base for Sun Yat-sen University to cultivate high-level medical talents. It has built a full-scale medical education system and a physician training system. It has 57 doctoral programs, 57 master programs, and a Sun Yat-sen University post-doctoral mobile station.

The hospital is a national standardized training base for resident doctors, the first general training base for general practitioners in Guangdong Province, a national physician qualification examination practice skills examination base (clinical category), and a Guangdong resident standardized training final exam practice skills examination base (Zhuhai City, Zhongshan City, Yangjiang City). The general medicine base and preventive medicine base have been approved as key major bases for standardized training base for resident doctors in Guangdong Province, and the geriatrics base has been approved as a training base for geriatrics in Guangdong Province (8 in Guangdong Province).

Scientific research

The hospital is propelled forward by the “Three Major Constructions (big platform, large team, and large project)” to promote the development of clinical research and basic research. The hospital currently has 2 provincial-level scientific research platforms (Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Biomedical Imaging, Guangdong Molecular Imaging Engineering Technology Research Center), multiple high-level scientific research platforms (Demonstration Library of Bio-Bank in Zhuhai of SYSU Precision Medicine Science Center, Infection and Immunology Research Center, Central Laboratory, Clinical Data Center, FAHSYSU-BGI Joint Laboratory, etc.).

The hospital is the first national institute for clinical trials of drugs in the west bank of the Pearl River Estuary, and 19 majors have passed the GCP accreditation of the National Medical Products Administration; the Phase I clinical trial laboratory is the first and only one in Zhuhai. The Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University is standing at a new starting point, adhering to the frontier of medicine, the strategy of Healthy China and the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
